The FAA issued a recommendation on July 28 to the flight crew of non-U.S. airlines flying into San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to back up a visual arrival by using a GPS approach normally stored in the aircraft’s flight management system (FMS). The onboard approaches can generate a virtual glideslope during visual approaches regardless of the status of ground-based electronics.
Elliott Aviation is installing its 100th King Air Garmin G1000 retrofit. In addition to the Garmin retrofit, the King Air B200 will receive new engines from Blackhawk, full paint, full interior, Raisbeck modifications, BLR winglets, LumaTech LED annunciator panels and Frakes exhaust.
Canadian aerospace research and development and evaluation company Marinvent has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Russian State Research Institute of Aviation Systems (GosNiias) to collaborate on western approval of Russian-produced and certified integrated modular avionics for commercial aircraft. Under the MOU, Marinvent will work with Russia’s AR Mak (Interstate Aviation Committee), which is responsible for certification, and GosNiias on meeting western certification standards. Marinvent’s Web-based CertPro software will be used to manage the certification process.
Horizon Air has received FAA approval to fly instrument approaches to required navigation performance (RNP) 0.1 standards in its Bombardier Q400s equipped with Universal Avionics UNS-1Ew flight management systems. The UNS-1Ew Waas/SBAS FMS enables Horizon pilots to fly stable 3-D flight paths to touchdown at airports in the Northwest U.S. that have published RNP approaches, but now to lower RNP 0.1 minimums. Compared to traditional but non-RNP approaches, the RNP approaches have been shown to save time and fuel.
Technicians at Ruag Aviation’s facility in Geneva, Switzerland, have completed the company’s first EASy II avionics upgrade in a Falcon 900EX. The EASy flight deck is based on Honeywell’s Primus Epic avionics system. The EASy II upgrade was done during a scheduled A/A+ check and includes Honeywell’s SmartView synthetic vision system (SVS) with HUD symbology displayed on the PFDs.
The new HeliSure systems introduced by Rockwell Collins aren’t just synthetic vision system (SVS) and terrain awareness and warning system (Taws) for helicopters but “a family of technologies that are going to provide solutions for helicopter cockpits,” according to Dan Toy, principal marketing manager for the company’s rotary wing business. The first products are HSVS and H-Taws and will be fitted to new AgustaWestland AW149s, AW189s, AW101s and AW169s.
With the continuing strains on the U.S. national budget and the possibility that the Administration’s sequestration program could last for several more years, Pentagon planners are said to be worrying that the costs of the future GPS III system could become out of reach, despite its major advances and the need to have modernized replacement satellites ready to be deployed as the orbital lives of current satellites end.
The FAA’s NextGen ATC modernization program faces long-term technical risks and still uncertain acceptance by airspace users. But after a decade in development, NextGen could be stalled by a nearer-term threat: substantially reduced funding from Congress. In June, the House appropriations committee released transportation funding legislation for Fiscal Year 2014 that would reduce the FAA’s capital funding account, which supports NextGen programs, to its lowest level since 2000.
The FAA claims the NextGen Air Transportation System initiative is progressing, according to its recently issued NextGen Implementation Plan report, which projects a reduction in delays of 41 percent by the end of the mid-term implementation period in 2020.
German light sport aircraft manufacturer Flight Design selected Garmin avionics for its new normal-category aircraft, the C4, a four-place composite single-engine aircraft. The new Garmin suite will feature angle of attack, dual air data heading reference system, synthetic vision and integrated autopilot with one-touch leveling.
The C4 features the Continental IO-360AF alternate fuels engine and an integrated full aircraft parachute system. The C4 will have a 1,200 nm range and a useful load of 1,320 pounds.
