Significant numbers of business aircraft operators have made little or no progress in complying with key avionics mandates, according to new research commissioned by Honeywell Aerospace with data gathered from AIN readers. The survey identified the mandates for ADS-B out, Fans/PM-CPDLC datalink capability and Fans-1/A (North Atlantic region) as the most pressing concerns.
Cessna Aircraft rolled out the first production Citation CJ3+ today at the company’s manufacturing facility in Wichita. The upgraded twinjet features a new interior with a redesigned cabin and cockpit, new pressurization and new diagnostics systems. It also has a Garmin G3000 avionics suite that includes turbulence detecting weather radar, TCAS II, TAWS and ADS-B capabilities. The CJ3+ was announced on March 20 and it is expected to receive FAA certification in the second half.
Honeywell (Booth 6622) is promoting a range of updates that can be applied to its satellite communication, avionics and cabin management systems. Such offerings can help operators extend the life cycle of their current fleets as well as increase asset value and reliability. Moreover, the modifications can enhance passenger experience as well as help operators meet new regulatory mandates.
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia-based charter operator Alpha Star Aviation Services (Booth 3824) has equipped its entire fleet with electronic flight bags (EFBs). The six VIP aircraft include three Airbuses (ACJ318, ACJ319 and ACJ320), one Gulfstream G550, one Hawker 900XP and one ATR 42. The company intends to have its pilots using EFBs–iPads connected to a Rockwell Collins system–during the entire flight in the short term. “Our crews were trained by Lufthansa and FlightSafety,” CEO Salem Al Muzaini added.
The recent tragedy of the still-missing Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 has brought the tracking of aircraft sharply into focus, and at a conference last week in Montreal ICAO forged a consensus to develop aircraft tracking as matter of priority. While this is a welcome move, the ability to transmit more than just positional data is critical in allowing ground experts to not only determine the causes of losses, but also to give aircrew a better chance of averting a loss.
Universal Avionics (Booth 6555) announced that Clay Lacy Aviation is primed to offer an STC for installation of the UniLink UL-801 Communications Management Unit (CMU) to provide Future Air Navigation System (FANS) 1/A+ capabilities for the Gulfstream GIV and GIV-SP.
Installation in the initial certification aircraft began in January, with STC approval expected by the third quarter this year. An amendment to the STC for the GV will immediately follow initial certification, along with application for EASA certification.

For the remainder of the 20th century, the process of corporate realignment that resulted in today’s Honeywell gathered pace as industry leaders Garrett, Bendix, King, Allied-Signal, Sperry, Sundstrand and Lycoming all ended up in one technology powerhouse.
