Honda Aircraft announced this morning deals with three major component suppliers for the HondaJet. GKN Aerospace of Tallassee, Ala., will supply the structural subassembly for the fuselage, while Avcorp of Delta, British Columbia, will provide the wing structure sub-assembly. Both are major suppliers of civil and defense aerospace systems and components.

Emteq (Booth No. 3051) has a unique way of seeing things. This time around it’s the company’s new night-vision imaging system (NVIS), upgraded with LED technology.
According to the New Berlin, Wis.-based company, NVIS is designed to provide EMS, law enforcement and search-and-rescue helicopters with more capable cabin/cockpit systems. It is now applicable to dual-mode dome lights, dual-mode wash lighting and flexible strip lighting.

Avionics manufacturer and integrator Thales and helicopter OEM Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. are discussing plans to incorporate a synthetic-vision system (SVS) into the Thales TopDeck avionics suite in Sikorsky’s new S-76D, but whether it will be available by the aircraft’s expected FAA certification date in 2008 is still up in the air.

The new Chelton Flight Systems Heli-SAS autopilot should be certified on the Bell 206 and 407 late this year, according to Chelton president Gordon Pratt. Chelton and Bell subsidiary Edwards & Associates will jointly develop the supplemental type certificate (STC) for the HeliSAS, which will be first available for new and retrofit installations on the 206 and 407.

A CMC Electronics SureSight M-Series infrared enhanced-vision system (EVS) sensor has been installed on an AgustaWestland AW139 for a corporate customer by Edwards & Associates, a subsidiary of Bell Helicopter. The avionics installation specialist expects to receive the FAA STC for the installation soon.

Honeywell has been exploring synthetic-vision system (SVS) technology for  the helicopter cockpit, but the display concept will bear little resemblance to the system the company unveiled last summer for fixed-wing applications.

Following last year’s NTSB recommendation that all turbine-powered helicopters be equipped with terrain awareness and warning systems (TAWS), Air Logistics has decided to upgrade its newer medium and heavy twin-engine helicopters with Honeywell enhanced ground proximity warning systems (EGPWS).

Appareo Systems, a small technology company from Fargo, N.D., announced yesterday it has partnered with Gulf Coast giant Air Logistics, a Bristow Group company, to produce an interesing flight monitoring tool called Aircraft Logging and Event Recording for Training and Safety (Alerts).

Robinson Helicopters of Torrance, Calif., arrived at Heli-Expo armed with orders and prepared to sell even more of its piston-powered helicopters. The question on everybody’s mind, though, is whether CEO Frank Robinson will finallly launch the R66 this year.
