Of 130 U.S. rotorcraft lost in combat zones to non-hostile reasons between 2002 and 2008 around half were attributed to DVE (degraded visual environments), CFIT (controlled flight into terrain) and wire/obstacle strikes. These losses accounted for 49 percent of the 189 fatalities. Such compelling figures underline the importance of the efforts being undertaken to tackle DVE issues and to enhance situational awareness to reduce CFIT and strikes.

A new contract worth $2.5 billion has been signed under the Saudi-British Defence Co-operation Program (SBDCP) to upgrade the pilot training syllabus of the Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF). Prime contractor BAE Systems will supply 22 Hawk AJTs (advanced jet trainers), along with 55 Pilatus PC-21 turboprops, and a variety of ground-based training devices.

BAE Systems and design consultancy Design Q have unveiled their latest interior concept for the Avro Business Jet, the ABJ Elegante.

Designed with “space and grandeur,” the Elegante is the fourth of five interiors commissioned by BAE from Worcestershire-based Design Q for different executive aircraft market segments.

BAE Systems has announced a plan to implement a new “regionalized” strategy to support the Latin American market, where some 90 of its aircraft are now in service with nearly 40 operators. The company unveiled the new support strategy at its first ever Americas operators’ conference, held in Lima, Peru, May 23 and 24.

BAE Systems announced today an agreement to sell its commercial aircraft lease portfolio and asset-management business to investment affiliates of New York-based Fortress Investment Group for $187 million in cash. Expected to close in the third quarter, the sale remains subject to regulatory approval and “other conditions.”

BAE Systems and Design Q have unveiled the latest cabin concept for the Avro Business Jet, an executive version of BAE’s Avro RJ and BAE 146 regional jets. The concept is known as ABJ Fusion, and the cabin on display at the NBAA Convention in October was the third of five designs created by Design Q on behalf of BAE Systems. The first two were introduced at Ebace in Geneva this past spring.

BAE Systems agreed to pay a $400 million fine to settle a U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) investigation into commission payments made to secure arms contracts. BAE also made an out-of-court settlement with the UK Serious Fraud Office (SFO), which has been investigating the company since 2004.

The issue of “toxic cabin air” is becoming a significant concern. BAE Systems, with Quest International UK, recently launched a new “active air management system.” BAE Systems will be introducing AirManager in its own BAe 146/Avro RJ airliners (a type of airplane that has been singled out for scrutiny by cabin environment activists),
and will also make the system available to buyers of its executive conversions.
