According to Spanish media reports, officials in the country’s capital, Madrid, have shelved plans to construct a $235 million general aviation airport south of the city in El Alamo. Citing budget cuts and demand forecasts, the administration of regional President Esperanza Aguirre is seeking to close Aeropuertos de Madrid, the government-owned agency that had completed the airport’s construction design plans. According to the Spanish Executive Aviation Association (Aesave), last year there were approximately 9,000 flights by business jets in Spain, half of them through the Madrid region.
Spanish business aviation group Gestair (Stand 450) and the country’s flag carrier Iberia have joined in a 50-50 joint venture to create Corjet Maintenance. Corjet specializes in maintenance of business jets, as well as providing logistics and parts support.
Spanish airports authority AENA said the new runways being built at Madrid Barajas Airport and Barcelona El Prat Airport will both be operational next summer. The news could bring relief to business aircraft operators–especially in Madrid, where access to Barajas has been especially difficult during the prolonged construction program, which also includes a new terminal and another runway.

Gestair makes a fair claim to being Spain’s leading business aviation group, with about 60 percent of the national executive charter market. It also claims to be the third-ranking operator for the whole of Europe in terms of the number of aircraft operated and passengers carried.
One of the biggest problems for Spanish business aviation operations from Madrid is the thorny issue of Barajas airport. Six years ago business aviation operators had to relocate “temporarily” from Madrid Barajas airport to Torrejón NATO military base, where operators share facilities with the air force.
