Microturbo is exhibiting an auxiliary power unit (APU) and an engine starter here at NBAA 2014 and also is developing two new APUs. Last summer, the Safran group company assumed full responsibility for two programs in which it was a minority partner: the APUs for the Dassault Falcon 5X and the Bombardier Global 7000/8000. Microturbo now wants to play a greater role in business jet APUs, including meeting the needs of future system architectures.
Bombardier Aerospace recently completed a non-temperature-restricted bleedless auxiliary power unit starting test, following a 10-hour cold soak at -40 degrees F and using a starter/generation system and lithium-ion battery system. The Safran Microturbo e-APU system included a starter generator and power electronics from Thales and a Saft Li-ion battery system. The prototype equipment was designed for business jets, Bombardier said. The tests were conducted at the Safran Turbomeca cold-chamber facility in Pau, France.
Eaton has been selected by Rolls-Royce to continue providing its engine build-up for another Trent engine program, the Trent XWB-97. The 97,000 pound-thrust turbofan will power the new Airbus A350-1000 platform.
Liebherr-Aerospace recently delivered the first bleed air system for the C919 narrowbody to Chinese aircraft manufacturer Comac, the Toulouse, France-based aerosystems supplier announced on Tuesday. Comac chose Liebherr-Aerospace to develop, manufacture, qualify and certify the C919’s integrated air management sytem in 2010.

The recent experience of the crew of a Part 121-operated Embraer ERJ-145 underscores the value of returning to the destination in the event of encountering icing. The crew noticed that ice (which they later classified as “severe”) had begun accumulating on the windshield wipers and nose and that the aircraft’s anti-ice system could not be turned on. As they attempted to operate the anti-ice manually, the system came to life but produced a master warning on the Eicas followed by a “bleed air 2 overtemp” warning.
Anti-icing surfaces under development at GE and EADS could one day reduce and possibly even eliminate the need for existing anti-icing techniques. Research organizations at the two major aerospace companies are currently working on surfaces that would naturally repel ice without using energy.
Embraer performed the Legacy 500 first engine run on January 17 at its headquarters in São José dos Campos, Brazil, the company said yesterday. Between the midsize jet’s December 23 rollout and the first run of its Honeywell HTF7500E engines, Embraer conducted several ground tests, including APU and refueling tests.
Taking a proactive approach toward the anti-icing regulations proposed by the FAA in June 2010–and still unscheduled for adoption into the FARs–Spirit AeroSystems (Booth No. C11720) has been working with Wichita State University and an undisclosed supplier to develop two new anti-icing systems for nacelles surrounding large aircraft engines.
Bombardier’s new Learjet 85 is the latest in a growing line of business jets to feature an integrated air management system from Liebherr-Aerospace & Transportation (Booth No. N5307). The company’s expansion into business aviation is in line with its aim to become the world leader in civil aircraft air systems.
