Bombardier landed the first regional jet sale to a U.S. carrier this year when Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines subsidiary Atlantic Southeast Airlines converted options to firm orders on three 50-seat CRJ200s last month. The order, valued at some $68.7 million, brings to 237 the number of 50-seat CRJs ordered by ASA and fellow Delta subsidiary Comair, of which 191 have been delivered and another 46 remain on backlog.
ERA named German operator Eurowings regional airline of the year at last month’s general assembly, 12 months after the German regional airline placed second in the competition. Eurowings attributes its success to its fleet mix and route network; an appropriate alliance policy with German flag carrier Lufthansa, which has an option to increase its 25-percent stake in the regional to 49 percent; and an attractive “customer product.”
The Air Accidents Investigation Branch of the UK’s Department of Transport implicated jet lag and over-the-counter drugs in the crash of Bombardier Challenger 604 N90AG, in Birmingham, England, on Jan. 4, 2002. The failure of the impaired crew, which had taken antihistamines the night before, to have the airplane de-iced before takeoff may have caused the jet’s stall, roll to the left and crash on takeoff, concluded the DoT.

Bombardier continued its deliberate penetration of South and Central America last month with an order from Mexico’s AeroLineas MesoAmericanas (ALMA) for a pair of CRJ900s. Based in Guadalajara, ALMA began operations in June last year and already flies 15 fifty-seat CRJ200s to 25 Mexican destinations. The order came on the heels of a separate deal to deliver four Q400 turboprops to Arik Air of Nigeria.
A Fayette County (Kentucky) Circuit Court judge ruled last month that Comair may not sue Lexington Blue Grass Airport for the crash of a Bombardier CRJ200 that killed 49 people on August 27 last year. Judge James Ishmael ruled that, as part of the county government, the airport enjoys sovereign immunity and therefore doesn’t carry legal responsibility in the case.
Mesa Air Group expected three of its Bombardier CRJ200s to enter service with the newly christened KunPeng Airlines by the end of this month. All three airplanes came from Mesa’s U.S. fleet, from which it continues gradually to shed 50-seat jets and de Havilland Dash 8 turboprops in favor of 70- and 86-seat RJs.
Flying Colours, the Peterborough, Ontario center, is adding 30,000 sq ft to its current completion and maintenance facility that will also include a client lounge, conference facility and offices.
An extended period of order taking for the world’s makers of regional airliners showed little sign of relenting last month, as Canada’s Bombardier grabbed at least two more major orders for CRJ regional jets while Brazil’s Embraer and the Franco-Italian ATR partnership counted the proceeds from a busy Paris Air Show.
Bombardier Aerospace unveiled a series of updates to its CRJ900 regional jet during a June 5 event at the Signature Flight Support FBO at Washington Dulles International Airport. The 76-seat CRJ900 NextGen on display there became the first to enter revenue service on June 7, when Northwest Airlines subsidiary Mesaba Airlines flew it to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport from Minneapolis.
