Bombardier appears no closer to a decision about whether to launch or scrub the nascent C Series program after president and COO Pierre Beaudoin revealed on January 31 that the company has moved back its target date for certification by another three years. Now, if the program ever does materialize, it would enter service in 2013, said Beaudoin.
One of three crewmembers was injured when their Challenger SE (special edition corporate version of the CRJ200 regional jet) crashed and burned February 13 while attempting to take off in a snowstorm from Moscow’s Vnukovo Airport on a ferry flight to Berlin for engine repairs. The FAA issued an emergency AD on Friday to all owners and operators of GE CF34-3A1, -3B and -3B1 turbofans after NTSB investigators found an electrical arc-out defect in the fan disk of the engine that broke apart on a Mesa Airlines Bombardier CRJ200 during a revenue flight on January 25.
The NTSB recovered roughly half of the fan disk, fan blades, parts of the engine cowling and thrust reverser, the engine spinner and pieces of the fan containment case from the GE CF34-3B1 turbofan that broke apart during a January 25 revenue flight of a Mesa Airlines Bombardier CRJ200 from Denver to Phoenix.
The June 2003 fatal crash of a Bombardier CRJ100 operated by Brit Air (a subsidiary of Air France) near Brest airport in France, was caused mainly by the pilots’ forgetting to select the autopilot approach mode (appr) when they began their approach, according to the final report of the Bureau d’Enquêtes et d’Analyses (BEA). The pilot was killed and five of the other 23 occupants of F-GRJS were injured in the accident.
Embraer appears to hold a surprisingly strong position in a contest with Bombardier to supply more 70-seat jets to Comair after new president Fred Buttrell issued an apparent endorsement of the Brazilian 70-seater in a letter to employees. Now flying 137 fifty-seat Bombardier CRJ200s and 27 CRJ700s, Comair would take another 10 CRJ200s and as many as 25 seventy-seaters if pilots agree to wage freezes and a one-year contract extension.

Transcripts released by the FAA early last month reveal that the pilots of the Pinnacle Airlines CRJ200 that crashed in Jefferson City, Mo., on October 18 purposely climbed to 41,000 feet to “have a little fun” before the jet, its 50 passenger seats empty, lost power and began a rapid descent. “We don’t have any passengers on board so we decided to have a little fun and come on up here,” said one of the pilots.
Embraer commercial vice president Fred Curado told AIN last month that he expected an order from China Eastern Airlines for 10 Harbin-Embraer ERJ 145s “sooner rather than later.” The contract would come as a blow to Bombardier, which has already delivered eight CRJ200s to China Eastern, one of which crashed into a frozen lake outside Baotou, Mongolia, on November 23, killing 53.
