Delta Air Lines has directed regional subsidiary Comair to shed more than half of its Bombardier CRJs over the next two years, according to a September 1 memo to employees from Comair president John Bendoraitis. The Cincinnati-based regional airline plans to cut 49 fifty-seat CRJs from next year through 2012, leaving it with 16 fifty-seat CRJ200s, 15 seventy-seat CRJ700s and 13 seventy-six-seat CRJ900s.

Yet another Bombardier CRJ landed with one side of its main landing gear retracted yesterday. The SkyWest CRJ200, operating in partnership with AirTran as Flight 3074 from Omaha, Neb., made an emergency landing at Milwaukee General Mitchell International Airport at about 5:10 p.m. local time with only its right main and nose gear extended. All 36 passengers and three crewmembers deplaned safely through the main cabin door.

Following the recent worldwide financial crisis and recession, regional airline services in Europe are set to change as operators move to introduce bigger equipment. Air Nostrum chief executive Carlos Bertomeu, for one, predicts that his carrier’s recent strategy to increase average capacity–and thereby reduce unit costs–will be copied elsewhere in the industry.

An Embraer E190 operated by China's Henan Airlines overshot the runway at Yichun City's Lindu Airport in the northeastern province of Heilongjiang, killing 43 of the airplane's 96 occupants, according to Chinese state-run media. The crash happened at 9:36 p.m. Tuesday after an otherwise uneventful 45-minute flight from Heilongjiang's capital, Harbin, Xinhua news agency reported.

Delta Air Lines announced last month that it has entered into definitive agreements to sell two of its wholly owned regional airline subsidiaries–Minneapolis-based Mesaba and Compass Airlines. Delta has sold Mesaba to Memphis, Tenn.-based Pinnacle Airlines for $62 million, and Compass to St. Louis-based Trans States Holdings for $20.5 million. Delta said it would use the proceeds from the transactions for general corporate purposes.

Germany’s Deutsche Lufthansa has exercised purchase rights on eight Bombardier CRJ900 regional jets, the Canadian manufacturer announced last month. Based on list prices, the value of the contract totals some $317 million. 

Lufthansa said it expects to take delivery of the new aircraft in the first half of next year and place the 86-seat airplanes with its Lufthansa Regional unit.

Bombardier Aerospace’s sales force will no doubt feel considerable pressure to boost CRJ transactions this month, as the company again considers cutting production of its regional jet line in Mirabel, Canada, in reaction to weak sales.

Flying Colours, a Canadian independent completion and refurbishment center, is knee-deep in cabin finish work on Challenger 850s and conversions of CRJ200 regional jets to executive use. The Peterborough, Ontario-based center delivered its first Challenger 850 completion under contract to Bombardier in December 2009, has another six in various stages of cabin finish work and is awaiting arrival of an eighth aircraft.
