Delta Air Lines last month became the first airline in the world to provide in-flight Internet service aboard its regional aircraft with the launch flight of a Wi-Fi-equipped Bombardier CRJ700 operated by Delta Connection carrier Atlantic Southeast Airlines.
Korean Air has converted a letter of intent covering 10 CS300 airliners to a firm order, Bombardier Aerospace announced in late July. The transaction also includes options on 10 CS300s and purchase rights on another 10. The larger of the two C Series models, the CS300 can hold as many as 145 passengers, assuming a seat pitch of 30 inches.
St. George, Utah-based SkyWest Airlines signed a letter of intent last month to fly 14 Bombardier CRJ200s as US Airways Express under a capacity purchase agreement. The three-year deal would call for the SkyWest jets to replace CRJ200s and Bombardier Dash 8 turboprops now supplied by Mesa Air Group out of Phoenix starting in the middle of next year.
Despite all the fits and starts, NextGen in the U.S. will eventually affect business aircraft operators, although perhaps not on the schedule that the FAA currently espouses. It is not too soon to start considering the impact of NextGen on business aviation and how it will drive equipment requirements.
Bombardier’s largest regional airliner–the CRJ1000 NextGen (until the CSeries enters service in 2013)–has made a nearly flawless since entry into service last December. With 13 CRJ1000s flying for Brit Air and Air Nostrum, the fleet has achieved a 99.4-percent dispatch reliability rate and 99.9 schedule completion rate.

Uruguay’s Pluna Air Lines has placed a firm order on three more 90-seat Bombardier CRJ900s worth $129 million at list prices, the Canadian manufacturer announced in late April. Based at Carrasco International Airport, near Montevideo, the flag carrier operates a uniform fleet of 10 CRJ900s, with which it provides both domestic service and international flights to Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Paraguay.
Two of the new breed of big regional jets from the Eastern Hemisphere reached some long-awaited milestones recently, namely the Russian certification of the Sukhoi Superjet 100 and the signing of the first firm order for the Mitsubishi MRJ by an airline based outside Japan.
US Airways announced last month it would add first-class seating and service on 110 US Airways Express regional jets operated by Republic Airways, Mesa Air Group and PSA. Plans call for the airline to install first-class seating on Embraer E170s and E175s, along with Bombardier CRJ700s and CRJ900s, beginning in October with the E175 fleet. It expects to finish outfitting the three remaining types by the end of January.
The NTSB has launched an investigation into the wingtip clipping that occurred between an Air France Airbus A380 (F-HPJD) and a Comair Bombardier CRJ700 (N641CA) at New York JFK International Airport last night.
