Completion and modification specialist PATS Aircraft (Booth No. 2857) has announced a partnership with Tailwind Capital to offer executive/VIP conversions of the Bombardier CRJ-200 regional airliner. The conversions include an auxiliary fuel system to extend the range to 3,000 nm.
Canada-based aircraft completions specialist Flying Colours (Booth No. 4625) has unveiled plans for expansion of its Peterborough, Ontario location. In addition to its existing 60,000 sq ft facility–which is dedicated to exterior painting, interior completions and modifications, aircraft maintenance and repair–Flying Colours is beginning construction on another 30,000-sq-ft building that it expects to complete early next year.
Bombardier Aerospace is responding to demand for bigger regional jets with its 100-seat CRJ1000 and continues to mull a 90-seat stretch of its Q400 turboprop. Regional airlines are thriving, but constant pressure on operating costs means their equipment is getting steadily bigger, the company’s top executives agreed at a pre-show briefing in Belfast last month.
Bombardier CRJ (CL-600-2D24), Las Vegas, April 30, 2006–Northwest Airlines ground service personnel failed to set the parking brake properly on the lead baggage cart, which crashed into a Mesa Airlines CRJ taxiing for departure at McCarran International Airport, the NTSB determined. The Mesa pilot had reached an intersection and spotted the runaway baggage carts rapidly approaching.
Bombardier CL-600-2B19, Moscow, Feb. 13, 2007–A U.S.-registered Challenger SE (a corporate variant of the Canadair Regional Jet) was destroyed when it crashed while taking off from Moscow’s Vnukovo International Airport. The captain and first officer were seriously injured and a mechanic who was on board sustained minor injuries. The airplane was departing for Berlin Schoenefeld Airport.
Bombardier’s achievements this year in getting new business jets into the marketplace are particularly noteworthy in view of the company’s overall financial statistics. An increase in business aircraft deliveries helped boost Bombardier revenues in the first quarter ending April 30.
The Bombardier CRJ line of regional jets added to its ample order totals recently when over the span of two weeks Mesa Air Group and SkyWest Airlines each signed new deals involving 50-, 70- and 86-seat jets. In Mesa’s case, the Phoenix-based carrier exercised options on a mix of 20 CRJ700s and -900s for delivery through next year.

The FAA issued an emergency AD last month to all owners and operators of GE CF34-3A1, -3B and -3B1 turbofans after investigators found an electrical arc-out defect in the fan disk of the engine that broke apart during a Mesa Airlines revenue flight on January 25.
Bombardier appears no closer to a decision about whether to launch or scrub the nascent C Series program after president and COO Pierre Beaudoin revealed on January 31 that the company has moved back its target date for certification by another three years. Now, if the program ever does materialize, it would enter service in 2013, said Beaudoin.
