Piedmont Aviation Component Services recently added ATR 42 landing gear to its list of capabilities. Jennifer Giordano, Piedmont landing gear marketing manager, said, “Adding the ATR 42 to our landing-gear menu allows us to service additional equipment for our current customers as well as expand our customer base to include those flying the Dash 8-300.” The company also offers Dash 8-300 landing gear equipment for loan/exchange purposes.

Perhaps the most vital component in Bombardier’s C Series of single-aisle commercial jets will consist not of metal, pneumatics or electrical circuits, but money. By the end of last month the company expected to know the stakes governments would risk, as its February deadline for all to ante up approached. Unwilling to tip his hand, C Series program head Gary Scott wouldn’t reveal the number of U.S.
Last month’s Regco order for 10 Q400s accompanied a flurry of minor transactions for Bombardier since AIN’s February issue went to press, starting with a contract for a pair of 74-seat Q400s from South African Airways.
Regco Holdings CEO Robert Deluce last month announced his intention to proceed with plans to base a new regional airline at Toronto Island Airport this year. The new carrier, called Porter Airlines, would fly 10 new 70-seat Bombardier Q400 turboprops to 17 Canadian and U.S. destinations within a 500-nm radius of Toronto.
The European Aviation Safety Agency last month determined that the failure of the main landing gear of a Scandinavian Airlines Q400 on October 27 did not result from a design flaw, and that the latest incident bore no direct relationship with the two earlier cases that led to the grounding of the airline’s entire fleet of 74-seat turboprops.
The high-flying turboprop market shows no sign of losing altitude, as builders on both sides of the Atlantic continue to collect a steady flow of sizable orders from around the globe.
The sagging demand for turboprop airplanes cost 450 Bombardier workers their jobs last month, as the Canadian company handed out layoff notices to 310 production employees and 140 support personnel at its de Havilland plant in Toronto. The cuts affected some 9 percent of de Havilland’s 5,000-strong workforce.
A second incident involving the collapse of a right main landing gear shortly after touchdown on a Bombardier Q400 operated by SAS has prompted an OEM recommendation.
SAS said last month that Bombardier would owe it at least SKr500 million ($77 million) in compensation for the grounding of its Q400 turboprop fleet. Two separate incidents of collapsed landing gear on SAS Q400s prompted Bombardier and Transport Canada on September 12 to call for the grounding of some 85 airplanes worldwide.
Excel-Jet of Monument, Colo., is suing the FAA over the June 2006 crash of its proof-of-concept Sport-Jet, which was destroyed on takeoff from Colorado Springs Airport. According to witnesses, the single-engine composite jet rolled to the left, hit the runway and cartwheeled down the runway just after takeoff. The test pilot and flight-test engineer sustained minor injuries.
