Brake to Vacate
Hawker Beechcraft King Air A200, Bridgewater, Va., Sept. 25, 2008–The King Air was substantially damaged when it overran the runway while landing at Bridgewater Air Park. The ATP-rated pilot and his sole passenger, a mechanic, were not injured on the maintenance test flight.
Airbus A300-600F, El Paso, Texas, June 10, 2002–The NTSB determined that the cause of the tail strike the FedEx Airbus suffered on takeoff from El Paso International was the flight crew’s failure to obtain Vr speed before rotation, which resulted in insufficient lift. The crew had entered the V-speeds in the flight-management system (FMS) and both crewmembers’ primary flight displays (PFDs) showed no discrepancies.
Cessna 525A CitationJet, Dexter, Maine, Oct. 7, 2002–Citation N57EJ was substantially damaged during a runway overrun at Dexter Regional Airport (1B0). The ATP pilot and one passenger received serious injuries, and two passengers received minor injuries.
To professional aerospace observers, there should be no such thing as culture shock, but even after several years of Airbus A380 gestation some of its vital statistics retain their “gee whiz” characteristics. Not least are the new mega-jetliner’s design weights, taking off at up to almost 1,235,000 pounds and landing at more than 851,000 pounds.
