Averting a strike that would have shut down offshore helicopter operations throughout much of the North Sea, 200 helicopter pilots represented by the British Airline Pilots Association (Balpa) have voted overwhelmingly to approve a massive pay raise offered by their employer, North Sea operator CHC Scotia.
The pilots of British Airways’ wholly owned regional subsidiary CitiExpress last month began consultations with union leaders over industrial action after talks about restructuring the division broke down. BA planned to announce late last month that further changes at CitiExpress would result in the closure of bases at some airports and the loss of more pilot jobs. British Airways plans to cut 3,000 jobs throughout the company by October.
North Sea oil and gas producers could be facing a summer of extreme discontent should a voting majority of union members at CHC Scotia have their way.
Last month the European Union (EU) Council of Transport Ministers and the European Parliament finally agreed on new common flight time limitations (FTL) for commercial operations. But the new standards have provoked an angry response from pilot unions for being unsafe and for allowing too much latitude for individual EU member states to continue imposing their own limits.
