Gulfstream International Group, the parent company of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based Gulfstream International Airlines, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection today in an effort to restructure its debt and secure long-term financing. Gulfstream said the filing, registered with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Florida, would not affect its flight schedule.

While DHL is no longer using the airport, ABX Air and other companies will still operate there. The Air Park was the Clinton County AFB until September 1971, when the base was closed.

The FAA continued to investigate charges leveled at Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based Gulfstream International Airlines last month after proposing in May that the carrier pay a $1.3 million fine for duty-time violations and installing automotive air-conditioner compressors and improperly maintained vent blowers on its fleet of 27 Beech 1900Ds.

The U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Southern District of Florida, issued an order late last month holding Jet Network FC Holdings (JNFC), JetCard Plus and JetCard CEO Paul Svensen in contempt of court for allegedly violating a December 8 court order to submit documents and information about Svensen’s former employer, Jet Network LLC.

PIPER PA-31-350, HOLLYWOOD, FLA., JAN. 1, 2002–One passenger died and four others were seriously injured when the pilot was forced to ditch into the Atlantic Ocean after declaring a minimum fuel condition to Miami Center. The flight was en route from North Eleuthera Island to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL). As the pilot received a handoff to the FLL tower, he declared an emergency.

That’s why the recent opening of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.’s new downtown heliport was so remarkable. Before the June 5 opening of the new facility, there were 265 authorized private helipads in the state of Florida and just two public-use heliports, only one of which was in a downtown area.

The holding company for Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based regional Gulfstream International Airlines and Gulfstream Training Academy hopes to raise some $10.2 million through an IPO on the American Stock Exchange, according to a registration statement filed with the SEC early last month. The company plans to sell 1 million shares on the Amex under the symbol GIA.
