Salinas Municipal Airport in central California has finished upgrades that include new offices, a conference room and modernized common areas. Other airport projects still under way include reconfiguration of the transient parking ramp, installation of a new beacon and a new taxiway to the upcoming Salinas Jet Center, which is being developed by FBO Central Coast Aviation.
The City of San Diego has issued a request for proposals for development of a 10-acre site at Brown Field Municipal Airport. Any aviation-related use will be considered, according to the RFP, which added that the site is ideal for an FBO, maintenance company, flight school, charter operation or hangar rental facility. The site was occupied by used car companies and housed an underground fuel farm, which has been removed.
San Diego-based Crownair has acquired RoigWest Maintenance, a turbine aircraft maintenance and support center at Van Nuys Airport, the third busiest general aviation airport in the world, as well as West Coast Jet Services at McClellan Palomar Airport in Carlsbad, Calif. West Coast Jet Services will now be known as Crownair Aviation CRQ.

The mounting tensions between local residents and airports such as Santa Monica, John Wayne and Burbank, have highlighted the need for improved community relations and prompted Chino Airport authorities to look beyond their own borders in planning the airport’s expansion.

Fresno Yosemite International Airport is reaping 40 percent of its energy requirements from a solar panel installation at the airport, the largest such system ever installed at an airport in the U.S. Energy savings are projected at about $13 million during the next 20 years.
The empty Garrett Jet Center at Van Nuys Airport should finally see a new tenant. Local developer Castle & Cooke Aviation, which already operates a hangar and office facility at Van Nuys, has entered negotiations with Los Angeles World Airports to lease the Jet Center property and develop an FBO. Castle & Cooke does not have retail fueling rights at its existing facilities although it does provide fuel to tenants.
After managing and operating the Apex Aviation FBO at Sonoma County Airport in Santa Rosa, Calif., since January, Kaiserair has purchased the FBO and begun remodeling the facility. Kaiserair’s plans for the new Santa Rosa Jet Center include a new fuel farm, a 30,000-sq-ft hangar, a renovated 8,000-sq-ft FBO terminal and more hangars for tenant storage.
The California state legislature has passed a bill that asks the FAA to abide by the city of Santa Monica’s attempt to bar certain jets from using Santa Monica Airport (SMO). The state assembly passed bill AJR 37 in July, and a majority of the senate voted for the bill last month.
