Fresno Yosemite International Airport is reaping 40 percent of its energy requirements from a solar panel installation at the airport, the largest such system ever installed at an airport in the U.S. Energy savings are projected at about $13 million during the next 20 years.
The empty Garrett Jet Center at Van Nuys Airport should finally see a new tenant. Local developer Castle & Cooke Aviation, which already operates a hangar and office facility at Van Nuys, has entered negotiations with Los Angeles World Airports to lease the Jet Center property and develop an FBO. Castle & Cooke does not have retail fueling rights at its existing facilities although it does provide fuel to tenants.
After managing and operating the Apex Aviation FBO at Sonoma County Airport in Santa Rosa, Calif., since January, Kaiserair has purchased the FBO and begun remodeling the facility. Kaiserair’s plans for the new Santa Rosa Jet Center include a new fuel farm, a 30,000-sq-ft hangar, a renovated 8,000-sq-ft FBO terminal and more hangars for tenant storage.

Renovations are complete at the Million Air Victorville at Southern California Logistics Airport. The facility features a 10,000-sq-ft terminal with pilot lounge, theater, flight-planning room, coffee bar, café and quiet rooms. The airport is about 80 miles northeast of Los Angeles and offers a 15,050-foot runway, the second longest in the U.S.
In the three years that Business Jet Center (BJC) has been open at Oakland (Calif.) International Airport, the FBO has doubled the number of gallons of fuel sold and traffic has jumped by 200 percent. The first quarter of this year continued strong, with fuel volume climbing 20 percent compared to the same period last year. “This is shaping up to be another solid year of growth for our location,” said general manager David Mills.

The city of Santa Monica’s latest attempt to prohibit operation of Category C and D jets at Santa Monica (Calif.) Airport (SMO) is on hold again, following a U.S. District Court ruling. The court held a hearing to consider a temporary restraining order filed by the United States and the Department of Transportation after the city council voted in April to enact the ban on aircraft with approach speeds greater than 121 knots.
Plans for a regional airport at the former El Toro Marine Corps Air Station in Orange County, Calif., face a hurdle in the form of an initiative on the March 6 election ballot that would specifically bar any aviation-related use of the base. Despite the electoral challenge, the county is proceeding with El Toro Airport development.
