Signature Flight Support completed its acquisition of Maguire Aviation Group at Van Nuys Airport. Through this acquisition, Signature expanded its FBO at Van Nuys to a combined footprint of 1.17 million sq ft of hangar, ramp, passenger lounges and office space. This also includes a dedicated NetJets facility at Van Nuys.

Landmark Aviation at Oakland International Airport received Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) Access Standard Security Program (DASSP) approval. As such, the FBO can serve as a gateway for authorized DASSP operators wishing to fly directly into Washington National. Fewer than 30 FBOs in the U.S. have this approval, according to Landmark Aviation.

After the city of Santa Monica, Calif., filed a complaint on October 31 against the FAA seeking “to establish the city’s right to control future use of the Santa Monica Airport property,” the FAA had until December 31 to respond. The FAA filed for an extension, looking to move the response date to February 12, but on December 16 U.S. District Court Judge John Walter refused to grant the extension.

New Zealand’s Christchurch International Airport has won the 2013 Safety Award from theAustralasian Aviation Ground Safety Council (AAGSC). The facility was selected after of its management installed CCTV monitors around the airport to keep staff up to date on ground traffic issues. Another factor was the airport’s new ramp lights, designed to prevent injury to ground personnel. The lights are activated when aircraft are about to push back from the terminal.

Last month, the San Jose City Council approved the 50-year ground lease agreement with Signature Flight Support for its proposed $82 million FBO at Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport. The 29-acre complex will eventually be home to the service provider’s West Coast headquarters. It will be developed in conjunction with Blue City Holdings, the company that operates the aircraft of nearby Google’s executives.

Duncan Aviation named Scott Heath manager of Duncan Aviation Sacramento and Duncan Aviation Hayward avionics satellites, located at Sacramento Mather and Hayward Executive airports. Heath has been with Duncan Aviation since 1998, most recently serving as an avionics team leader over the last 10 years for both the Fort Worth and Dallas avionics satellites. Before that, he worked as an avionics installation technician at the Duncan Aviation MRO facility in Lincoln, Neb.

Landmark Aviation has broken ground on its new FBO at San Diego International Airport. The 12.4-acre FBO campus will feature a 20,000-sq-ft terminal and five hangars, along with 250,000 sq ft of ramp space. The facility will be built to achieve Leed Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. “This groundbreaking officially kicks off the much anticipated FBO campus development that we have all been working so hard toward,” said Landmark president and CEO Dan Bucaro.

The city of Santa Monica, Calif., has filed a complaint against the FAA that might finally decide the issue of who has control of its beleaguered airport and also set precedents in legal disputes about airport ownership and control throughout the U.S.

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) management recently reviewed how well communications functioned after last summer’s crash of an Asiana Airlines Boeing 777. An independent audit found that the airport’s emergency communications notification system failed, as did the airport’s website. On-site firefighters also failed to inform local commanders of the presence of an occupant of the aircraft near its left wing.
