The city of Santa Monica, Calif., has filed a complaint against the FAA that will force resolution of the issue of who controls the airport. The complaint, filed on Thursday in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, seeks “to establish the City’s right to control future use of the Santa Monica Airport property.”

Three anti-airport groups in Southern California have formed a new organization–Airport2Park–that seeks to turn part or all of Santa Monica Airport into a large park. Formed by the Community Against Santa Monica Airport Traffic, Concerned Residents Against Airport Pollution and Sunset Park Anti-Airport, Airport2Park held a “community vision workshop” last week to promote its agenda. More than 150 people attended, including local anti-airport politicians Ted Lieu, a California state senator, and Los Angeles city council member Mike Bonin.
Van Nuys Airport owner Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) has issued a request for qualifications for two FBO properties at the airport. One property, situated on Daily Drive, has been vacant for several years. According to a LAWA spokeswoman, a pending deal on the location fell through, resulting in a new proposal process. The other location is the former Pentastar FBO, currently managed by Cutter Aviation, which has pledged a multimillion-dollar renovation of the facility if it is awarded a new lease. The submission window for the two properties closes at the end of this month.
BBA Aviation, the parent company of Signature Flight Support, acquired Maguire Aviation’s two FBOs at Van Nuys Airport for $69 million. The addition extends Signature’s footprint to nearly 1.2 million sq ft of hangar space, ramp, passenger terminals and office space at the airport. The purchase also includes the dedicated 10,000-sq-ft NetJets facility that opened last year and was operated by Maguire.
Temporary landing restrictions on foreign airlines at San Francisco International Airport (KSFO) in California have been withdrawn. Non-U.S. aircraft were banned in July from landing while another aircraft was using a parallel runway. Instituted shortly after the crash of Asiana Flight 214, a Boeing 777, on July 6, the ban was lifted with the recent return to service of the ILS for Runway 28L.
California’s Van Nuys Airport celebrated the completion of a seven-month, $20.5 million renovation on its main runway late last week. Aerobatic pilot Sean Tucker sliced the ceremonial ribbon with the speeding wing of his Challenger biplane, officially opening the revamped runway to traffic.

The airport is located about two miles east of LAX.
The tiltrotor test rig (TTR) development team at NASA Ames Research Center was honored today with a 2013 NASA Group Achievement Award. Team members include personnel from NASA Ames, Bell Helicopter and Triumph Aerospace Systems. The TTR is a joint project among NASA, the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force to develop a new large-scale system that can test prop-rotors up to 26 feet in diameter at speeds up to 300 knots, allowing for advanced research on tiltrotors and other rotorcraft concepts.
The FBO community at California’s Van Nuys Airport, one of the most heavily used business aviation fields in the U.S., is seeing some upheaval with the announcement this morning that Signature Flight Support parent company BBA Aviation will acquire Maguire Aviation’s two FBOs at Van Nuys for $69 million. Subject to antitrust approvals, the deal is expected to be completed by year-end.
