Cannes-Mandelieu Airport has apparently reached an accommodation with its neighbors, who threatened to shut down the airport permanently four years ago. According to Umberto Vallino, marketing and statistics manager for the airport, the key is a noise-abatement effort launched in April using a computer program developed by A-Tech Acoustic Technologies of Brussels, Belgium.

The French branch of the European Business Aviation Association (EBAA) expanded its board of directors from eight to 11 members, consisting of seven representatives of aircraft operators and four drawn from the group’s associate members.
The requirement for takeoff and landing slots has been suspended at France’s Cannes-Mandelieu Airport during the winter months but could be reintroduced in March. The airport conducted a trial of slot coordination between May 23 and September 15, in which four IFR arrivals were permitted each hour and up to six departures, but with a maximum number of nine total movements per hour.

The French town of Cannes faces the closure of one of its licensed heliports next March if local authorities do not reach a decision on an alternate site. Residents’ groups are threatening to block permission to move the existing heliport at Cannes Mandelieu Airport, which is completing an upgrade to its runways that has been coupled with an agreement to reduce traffic. The airport handles 10,000 helicopter movements annually.
