Arinc is increasing its investments in Middle East aviation infrastructure, including a major expansion of the company’s GlobalLink Acars VHF air-to-ground network.
“We’re in the process of a multiyear expansion of the VHF network in the EMEA [Europe, Middle East and Africa] region,” said David Poltorak, vice president and managing director for Arinc’s EMEA business.

Weather-data provider Meteorlogix introduced AviationWatch, a so-called “smart weather” briefing and alerting service for pilots that can be accessed on the ground and in the cockpit. Meteorlogix currently powers MxVision AviationSentry for a number of FBOs and corporate flight departments and maintains an online product that gives subscribers access to weather data over the Internet.

Arinc Direct said it now offers mobile flight-planning services that let pilots use their Blackberries and cellphones to file flight plans, view weather overlays on their planned routes, update departure times and view the status of filed flight plans.

Arinc and Norway telecommunications company Telenor have successfully completed ground testing of technology that lets passengers continue talking on their personal wireless phones after takeoff. The companies demonstrated the satellite-based concept at last month’s World Airline Entertainment Association conference, held September 20 to 24 in Seattle, and are holding talks with a number of airlines.

Jeppesen and Arinc Direct are pooling their resources to give corporate aviation customers the ability to uplink flight plans directly to an airplane’s flight management system. The service, available in the air or on the ground, eliminates the need for pilots to type flight plans into the FMS, cutting workload and reducing the risk of errors.

Arinc and Aeromech have announced plans to offer RVSM upgrade packages to owners and operators of Cessna Citations, Beechjets and Hawkers. The packages will be available beginning this month for the Cessna Citation 650, Beechjet 400/Mitsubishi 300 and Hawker 700, according to the companies.

Washington, D.C.-based private-equity firm The Carlyle Group last month completed the acquisition of Garrett Aviation Services from General Electric. Frank Klaus has been named president and chief executive officer of the newly created joint company of Carlyle subsidiaries Garrett Aviation Services, Piedmont Hawthorne Aviation and Associated Air Center.

Dubai Aerospace Enterprise is here with its most recent acquisition, the Landmark Aviation and Standard Aero maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) businesses that it purchased for $1.9 billion last month from private-equity firm Carlyle Group.
