It has been six years since Cessna last had a presence at a Farnborough air show. The company skipped the last two, reasoning that the aerospace and defense giants in residence were starting to crowd out business jet makers.
By the middle of last month Cessna’s Citation Mustang had made rapid flight-test progress. Since its first flight on April 23, the Citation Mustang has logged more than 36 hours in 19 flights. Testing has already begun onall Citation Mustang systems,including the Garmin G1000integrated avionics system andthe Pratt & Whitney Canada PW615F engines and FADECs.
As of early last month, the Citation Mustang prototype and two production examples (S/Ns 0001 and 0002) had logged more than 850 flight hours. Cessna chairman, president and CEO Jack Pelton told AIN that the Mustang is “on pace” to obtain FAA certification this fall, though he hinted the approval could even come a little earlier.
At this year’s EAA AirVenture show, plans and promises from the past finally yielded fruit. Last year, Honda flew the Honda-powered, Honda-designed HondaJet to Oshkosh in an impressive demonstration of the company’s aeronautical capabilities. Yet the company was maddeningly silent about bringing the jet to market until AirVenture 2006, when it announced plans to certify and market the HondaJet.
