Textron Aviation’s Cessna subsidiary announced yesterday that it is adding to its investments in diesel engine technology, with the new diesel-powered Turbo Skyhawk JT-A joining the single-engine product line. The Skyhawk JT-A is on display at the Textron pavilion this week at EAA AirVenture 2014.
Superior Air Parts and Christiansen Aviation have agreed to develop a supplemental type certificate (STC) to install Superior’s 180-hp Vantage engine on later-model Cessna 172R and -S models. A Skyhawk SV equipped with a mockup of the Vantage is on display at the Superior Air Parts AirVenture booth (No. 257).
Cessna Aircraft Company (SNF 001, 004) of Wichita and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU; NE 021-NE 025) of Daytona Beach, Fla., announced here at Sun ’n’ Fun a long-term agreement for the purchase of 57 Cessna Skyhawk 172s. Deliveries of 29 aircraft are scheduled for this year with the remaining 28 slated for delivery next year. The aircraft will replace the Cessna Skyhawks currently used in the university’s flight training program at its Daytona Beach and Prescott, Ariz. campuses.
There is no question about it, Art Spengler and Fred Ahles are excited about Fort Lauderdale, Florida-based Premier Aircraft Sales newest offering, upgrading primarily R and S model Cessna 172s from Lycoming to Centurion 2.0 diesel power, coupled to a German MT or U.S. manufacturered Hartzell Bantam propeller. The program, deemed the Premier Edition 172 upgrade, is a chance to revive the C172 market, if you ask Spengler and Ahles.
Moscow-based training organization ViraZH has ordered 79 Skyhawks to re-equip its flight schools throughout western Russia. Under an agreement signed today at the JetExpo show at the Russian capital’s Vnukovo-3 Airport, Cessna will start supplying the piston singles in next year’s third quarter and by the time all the deliveries have been made ViraZH will be fielding one of the world’s largest Skyhawk fleets.
Lion Air, Indonesia’s largest domestic carrier, is expanding its routes and training facilities, having ordered 20 Cessna 172s and one Boeing 737-900ER simulator, its third, to shore up an impending need for pilots. The budget carrier has placed orders for more than 500 narrowbodies with Boeing and Airbus; it currently has a fleet of 96 aircraft.
On July 28, the day before the opening of this year’s EAA AirVenture Oshkosh show, EAA chairman Jack Pelton and Mac McClellan, director of publications, flew a specially refurbished Cessna Skyhawk from Fond du Lac, Wis., to Oshkosh. The Skyhawk has been turned into a “RedHawk Training Aircraft” in a new venture by simulator manufacturer Redbird Simulations and its flight training division Redbird Skyport. AirVenture visitors can see the RedHawk at the exhibit near the main gate.
Urbana, Illinois-based Frasca International has expanded its market share in China with contracts totaling eight flight simulators this year and has also developed its first level-D full-motion simulator.
Auburn University has selected Southeast Aerospace, of Melbourne, Fla., to develop an ADS-B STC for the Cessna 172S, which will also include an approved model list (AML) STC for ADS-B installations in a variety of similar aircraft models. The Auburn installation includes FreeFlight’s Rangr ADS-B out system, which is a 978 MHz UAT (universal access transceiver) solution. The system includes the FreeFlight FDL-978-TX Rangr UAT, TC-987 control head, RF decoder, 1201 GPS/Waas receiver, two L-band antennas and a GPS/Waas antenna.
Flight-training company Airline Transport Professionals (ATP) has agreed to buy up to 30 Piper Seminoles in a transaction that could be worth as much as $18 million.
