Cessna Aircraft delivered the 100th Grand Caravan EX this week. The milestone aircraft was handed over at Cessna’s Wichita headquarters to Hussain Ali Rashid Almoalla for use at his aviation club in the UAE. Almoalla, who also owns a Cessna 182 Skylane and 206 Stationair, planned to personally fly the Caravan back to his home base in Abu Dhabi, a trip of more than 9,000 nm. Powered by the Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-140, the EX offers a 38-percent improvement in rate of climb over the standard Grand Caravan, as well as a 10- to 12-knot boost in cruise speed.
Safran’s SMA unit announced a new and larger jet-A fuel-powered piston engine at AirVenture on Tuesday. The turbocharged SR460 six-cylinder engine will have applications in the 330 to 400 horsepower range, will be available in 2015 and will have a target 2,400-hour time between overhaul (TBO) interval.
The Astronics Max-Viz 600 infrared enhanced vision system is now covered under a Cessna service bulletin for retrofit installation in late-model Cessna single-engine airplanes. The bulletin includes Skyhawks, Skylanes and Stationairs that have already been factory-provisioned for the FAA- and EASA-approved upgrade. Cessna authorized service centers can install the Max-Viz 600 EVS in about eight hours.
The annual Sun ’n’ Fun light aircraft convention opened today in Lakeland, Fla., with product-enhancement announcements from several exhibitors. Cessna will add optional flight into known icing (FIKI) capability to its Corvalis TTX high-performance piston single through an integrated wet system molded into the aircraft’s composite wings.
Cessna’s 206 piston-powered single is a great airplane, but replacing the original Continental Motors or Lycoming engine with a smooth-running Rolls-Royce 250 makes the 206 a powerful performer that is quieter and easier to fly. The surprising answer is zero dollars for a limited time in the 182 Skylane.
India’s National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) has selected the SMA SR305 diesel engine to power its new Hansa 4 four-seat light utility aircraft. The new turbocharged diesel has been developed by the French SMA consortium backed by Snecma, auto manufacturer Renault and European Aeronautics Defence & Space. The deal was announced on November 28 at the Aerotechnologies Summit in Bangalore, India.
The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) last month certified the Garmin G1000 integrated avionics system as part of the type certificate for the Diamond DA-42, a four-place diesel twin built in Austria.
Beginning with the 2008 model year, Cessna 172 buyers can pay $15,000 more for a 155-hp, two-liter turbocharged Thielert diesel engine-powered Skyhawk instead of the current avgas-burning 180-hp Lycoming version. Cessna dealers told AIN that the factory diesel Cessna 172 will retail for $298,500, including Garmin G1000 avionics and integrated GFC700 autopilot.

The FAA awarded full day/night, VFR/IFR certification for the $1.3 million Kodiak after 32 months of development.
