Following FAA approval being granted in July 2013, Wipaire Inc. received Brazilian approval this January for its Wipline 8750 floats for the Cessna 208B Grand Caravan and Grand Caravan EX. The company first received Brazilian validation for the floats on the Model 208 Cessna Caravan in September 2012.

Yesterday at an EBACE press conference, Cessna CEO Scott Ernest provided progress reports on current production in its jet, turboprops and piston lines as well as on the research-and-development status of its mid-range and super-mid-range cabin jets.

“The Garmin 3000-equipped Citation M2 is right on track and, best of all, we’ve sold out production completely for the next two years,” he said. “The [new] Cessna Citation X is expected in quarter-four 2013, while the G5000-equipped Latitude should be flying by January 2014, and I expect that to be in service in 2015.”

The state of Kerala in Southwest India has invested $2.2 million in a seaplane operation to promote major destinations located near its 24 lakes and water bodies known for backwater tourism and houseboats. Kerala Tourism Infrastructure (KTIL), the nodal agency for the project, awaits a Directorate General of Civil Aviation no-objection certificate (NOC), and plans a launch in mid-May.

Soloy Aviation Solutions’ long-standing relationship with Woodward propeller governors used on its Cessna 206/207 Mk 1 Turbine Pac has ended as a result of Woodward’s transferring its line to Honeywell. “While the Soloy gearboxes seem to last forever, vendor-supplied accessories come and go based on the supplier’s business needs,” said Soloy CEO Dave Stauffer.

Soloy Mark II 206 mod

Cessna’s 206 piston-powered single is a great airplane, but replacing the original Continental Motors or Lycoming engine with a smooth-running Rolls-Royce 250 makes the 206 a powerful performer that is quieter and easier to fly. Soloy Aviation Solutions has been stuffing the RR250 (formerly Allison) into the 206 since the mid-1980s, and demand for the extensive modification along with other 206 upgrades continues to grow.

Soloy Aviation has received FAA certification for its Soloy 206 Turbine Mk II, a Cessna 206H re-engined with a 417-shp Rolls-Royce 250-B17F/2 turboprop engine and fitted with a Hartzell three-blade prop with full beta reverse features. According to the company, the Mk II can climb at 2,460 fpm at sea level, cruise at 20,000 feet at 213 ktas, carry 775 pounds with full fuel and has an approximately 550-nm range.

Elling Halvorson, chairman of Papillon Airways, and a team of investors composed of helicopter industry executives have acquired Soloy Corp., an engine mod company. Soloy will operate as a stand-alone company and will remain located in Olympia, Wash., according to Halvorson. Soloy was founded in 1970 by Joe Soloy, who died in February at age 78.

Soloy Corp. has begun certification of its Turbine Pac powerplant conversion for the new Cessna 206H. The conversion installs an original Rolls-Royce 250-C20S turboprop in place of the airplane’s   Lycoming IO/TIO-542 piston engine. The Olympia, Wash., firm has delivered more than 75 turbine-powered 1977 to 1986 Cessna 206s and 207s under a current certification.

Record high fuel prices have served to concentrate minds on how to keep operational costs from spiraling. This cannot be other than good news for Thielert Aircraft Engines, which is recording burgeoning sales of its Centurion engines. With avgas difficult to obtain in some parts of the world, the general aviation market has been eagerly turning to diesel power both for the easier access to jet fuel and the need to cut costs.
