Cessna announced yesterday that its authorized sales representative for the region, Wallan Aviation in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, has placed an order for 25 airplanes valued at $110 million. Eleven are Citation business jets and the rest single-engine airplanes, 10 of which Wallan will use for a flight school it plans to establish in Riyadh next year.

Wallan Aviation, Cessna’s Middle East distributor, has become the first and only company to date to place advance orders for five of the U.S. manufacturer’s proposed new large cabin business jet. Cessna has yet to officially launch a new aircraft development based on its so-called Large Cabin Concept (LCC) but has made it clear that the program will go ahead.

Cessna Aircraft last month unveiled the Citation XLS, a faster and longer-legged derivative of the Citation Excel with a price tag of $9.895 million and described as “a logical step up for customers moving up from smaller light jets.”

Cessna’s newest light business jet, the Citation CJ3, completed its first two flights from Wichita Mid-Continent Airport on April 17. This is the first time the company has done both a first flight and a second flight on the same day.

During the convention, Cessna took signed orders for two Citation Xs, one Citation CJ1, one Caravan and one 206 Turbo Stationair–all for delivery this year. “We are extremely pleased with the outcome of EBACE,” said Cessna senior v-p of sales marketing Roger Whyte.

Microjets, or whatever you wish to call the emerging new breed of very light jets (VLJ), are the subject of much buzz these days. At least eight manufacturers, ranging from GA giant Cessna to automobile manufacturer Honda, have serious designs.

Cessna last month announced that all Citation CJ3s will now be equipped from the factory with a standard FMS performance database, providing takeoff and landing performance data. The CJ3 comes with a Rockwell Collins Pro Line 21 avionics system and FMS-3000 flight management system. As part of the FMS performance database, Cessna said V-speeds will be calculated and displayed on the PFD.

In another sign of an economic recovery of some measure within business aviation, Cessna confirmed it plans to add 400 workers to its current Wichita employment level of 8,100. An increase in scheduled bizjet deliveries this year and next, along with the introduction of new Citation models, prompted the hiring, a Cessna official said.
