The PowerJet SaM146 turbofan that France’s Safran is showing in scale model form here at the Dubai Air Show (Stand W510) represents not just the application of engine subsidiary Snecma’s CFM56 experience to a regional jet-size engine but one of the most ambitious attempts yet to combine the strengths of Western and Russian aerospace technology.

The Royal Saudi Air Force has chosen General Electric (Stand C410) to re-engine its Boeing F-15S fighters with the F110 powerplant. Deliveries of 65 of the F110-GE-129C engines are to begin in 2008. Including logistical support, the contract is valued at more than $300 million.
Pratt & Whitney Canada and the French-Russian Snecma-NPO Saturn joint venture are knocking at the door of the market for regional-jet turbofan engines. The geared-fan PW800 and the more conventional SM146 are not yet fully launched programs, but development is well under way.
Jean-Pierre Cojean, Snecma executive vice president of commercial engines and head of the Silvercrest engine program, said the engine-maker was disappointed, but not devastated, at not having clinched the contract to supply the engine for Dassault’s new Falcon super-midsize business jet to be launched in the next few months.
Despite having lost out to Rolls-Royce in the competition to power Dassault’s still-under-wraps super-midsize Falcon, Snecma is moving ahead with development its Silvercrest engine for business jets. The French manufacturer (Booth No. 824) is here exhibiting a full-size mockup of the 10,000-pound-thrust-class turbofan.
Adding to impressive sales tallies announced here this week, engine maker CFM said it landed South America’s Avianca as a customer for the CFM56B-5B engine to power 33 Airbus A319/A320s in a deal worth $500 million.
Kuwait Airways has renewed a time-and-material engine maintenance contract with Snecma Services covering the CFM56-5C engines on its Airbus A340s. Snecma Services has overhauled more than 50 CFM56-5s for the Kuwaiti flag carrier in the course of a relationship that started more than 10 years ago.
CFM International is having a bumper airshow, announcing more than $2 billion of contracts by the end of Tuesday and with more deals worth potentially another $200 million due to be signed today.
Snecma Services will provide Italian low-cost airline Wind Jet with maintenance for its CFM56 engines under an exclusive time and material contract signed before the show. The deal provides for maintenance, repair and overhaul for engines powering Wind Jets’s Airbus A320 fleet.
No aircraft flies with MTU engines, and yet MTU is involved in one third of all aircraft engine programs. MTU is the largest independent maintenance provider for aircraft engines and is associated with the production in many major engine programs. It is also leading Europe’s NEWAC research program, aiming to develop a new-technology engine-core concept.
