Under the terms of a Memorandum of Agreement signed by GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd. and CFM International, the two will work toward the development of a new CFM56 maintenance training center at Rajiv Gandhi Airport in Hyderabad. The center is envisioned to mirror CFM facilities operating in France, the U.S.
Engine maker CFM has chosen sides in the debate between proponents and opponents to composite materials on turbofan moving parts by introducing fibers woven in three dimensions for fan and even low-pressure turbine (LPT) blades. The bet on this next-generation composite manifests itself on the Snecma-General Electric venture's Leap-X “advanced turbofan” program.

GE Aviation and Singapore Technologies Aerospace (ST Aerospace) have signed an agreement to cooperate in engine maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), engine material services, aircraft support and engine and accessories repairs. The two companies also signed a 10-year repair license agreement, in which GE will give ST Aerospace access to OEM and technical data and assistance.
CFM International partners General Electric and Snecma have extended their successful 34-year partnership until 2040 and revealed plans to develop an all-new engine, provisionally called the Leap-X. The engine will provide 16 percent more fuel efficiency than today’s CFM56; however, it will not be offered for retrofit to existing aircraft.
CFM International has thrown down the gauntlet to engine manufacturers hoping to compete on the next generation of single-aisle airliners by accelerating its research on an advanced engine to replace its CFM56 by as early as 2015, the company announced here yesterday.
GE Aviation (Booth No. 558) has announced plans for a Business Jet Operations Center at its Cincinnati headquarters. The goal is to provide quick, single-contact support to operators of business jets powered by GE’s CF34 and CFM International’s CFM56 engines. The center, which will open next November, will be staffed around the clock with technicians capable of responding to parts availability, troubleshooting and field issues.
Jean-Pierre Cojean, Snecma executive vice president of commercial engines and head of the Silvercrest engine program, said the engine-maker was disappointed, but not devastated, at not having clinched the contract to supply the engine for Dassault’s new Falcon super-midsize business jet to be launched in the next few months.
The simulator for the PowerJet SaM146 engine destined to power the Superjet 100 regional airliner had recently arrived at the Sukhoi Civil Aircraft (SCAC) headquarters in suburban Moscow when, early last month, engineers incorporated the device into the so-called electronic bird, a systems integration rig complete with cockpit simulator and wrap-around visual system.
