China’s new ARJ21-700 regional jet appears on track to meet a revised timeline to achieve certification and first deliveries by year-end, according to the latest reports from its manufacturer. If the state-controlled airframer achieves that goal, it will happen barely a year after the 90-seater made its public debut at last November’s Airshow China in Zhuhai.

Brazil’s Embraer and China’s AVIC International Leasing Co., signed a memorandum of understanding today at the China International Aviation & Aerospace Exhibition in Zhuhai, China, outlining the terms of a new agreement designed to create financing opportunities for selling Embraer aircraft in the Chinese and international markets.
Last week China flew a new home-grown heavy-lift helicopter for the first time. The AC313 tips the scales at 27,600 pounds, can carry up to 27 people, has a maximum ferry range of 560 miles and was built at state-owned AVIC, the same company making Sikorsky S-76C++ airframes. The AC313 appears to be an outgrowth of the 14,000-pound Chinese Zhi-8. That medium helicopter is based on the 1970s-vintage Aérospatiale SA321 Super Frelon.
China has long toured the international airshow circuit heralding its ambitions to become a major player in the aerospace sector. The China National Aero Technology Import and Export agency is at Singapore Airshow this week (Stand V67) and seems to have made some tangible steps toward establishing its role in the industry.
The second ARJ21-700 jet flew for the first time on July 1. The airplane took off from Dachang Airport in Shanghai, where the Shanghai Aircraft Company performs final assembly, a month after rolling out of the factory and two weeks after its first taxi tests. The flight lasted 61 minutes, during which time the airplane cruised at an altitude of 9,000 feet.
Test pilots yesterday flew the first ARJ21-700 regional jet from its production site in Shanghai to China’s Flight Test Establishment in Xi’an, the capital of northwest China’s Shaanxi province, where developers plan to continue flight testing and earn type certification from the country’s civil aviation authorities. The 700-nm, two-hour, 19-minute trip marked the ARJ21’s longest flight to date, according to official Chinese sources.
China Aviation Industry Corp (AVIC) will build a $1.2 billion commercial helicopter plant in the northern port city of Tianjin with the local government to consolidate its diverse businesses. The move will allow the company to make full use of the geographical advantage of Tianjin as a port city, said a spokesman.
