Cirrus Aircraft is here exhibiting its SR22 piston single on the static display in a bid to persuade business aircraft owners that “there is always a good reason to have another plane,” as Jan-Peter Fisher, a Cirrus representative in Germany, put it. For example, the SR22 can land at small airfields that cannot accommodate a business jet. The five-seater is “about the fun of flying,” Fisher went on, not forgetting to mention the high cruise speed for the category: 200 knots.

Last week LoPresti Aviation Engineering unveiled new NeverFlat Lifesaver aircraft tires, which use a carbon-fiber band embedded in the circumference to retain shape. The tires also have improved wear, traction and rolling resistance, the company said. While the first application is for the Cirrus SR20 and SR22 piston singles, the technology is scalable and NeverFlat tires could be available for some business aircraft within two years.

LoPresti Speed Merchants expects to receive an STC for installation of a DeltaHawk diesel engine in the Cirrus SR20 early next year. The modification will include a new LoPresti-designed cowl system, new Hartzell propeller and fuel system adapted to jet-A and biodiesel-type fuels.

Venezuela is buying up to 12 Shaanxi Y-8 transports from China. The order is part of a series of agreements between the two nations that has already seen 18 Hongdu K-8W jet trainers acquired for the air force, the first of which was delivered in March. The four-engine Y-8 is in widespread Chinese service, and was originally created as a reverse-engineered version of the Antonov An-12 Cub.

Avidyne has received approval from Brazil’s Agência Nacional De Aviação Civil (ANAC) for retrofit installation of the DFC90 autopilot in Brazilian-registered Entegra-equipped Cirrus aircraft. The DFC90 is an attitude-based digital autopilot system designed as a slide-in replacement for the S-Tec 55X autopilot in existing Entegra-equipped Cirrus SR20s and SR22s.

At EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wis., this week, Avidyne introduced its new low-cost FMS400, which provides flight management system functionality but without WAAS precision approach capability. Like the WAAS-capable FMS900w, the FMS400 includes Avidyne’s GeoFill and FMSVectors functions; the FMS can later be upgraded to an FMS900w if desired. The FMS900w includes an FMS keyboard, which is optional on the FMS400.

Avidyne arrives at EBACE with the ink still drying on the TSOs it recently received for its Entegra Release 9 integrated flight deck system and FMS900w flight management system. The next-generation IFD system includes high-resolution displays, single-pilot IFR FMS with WAAS/RNP-capable GPS, fully digital VHF nav/com radios and enhanced autopilot interface.
