Difficult airspace and airport access combined with high costs are stunting the growth of business aviation in Asia, but governments in the region are beginning to get the message and are expected to improve the situation before too long. This was the message from Asian Business Aviation Association (AsBAA) president Jason Liao at today's opening general session of the inaugural Asian Business Aviation Conference & Exhibition (ABACE).

Greek aviation officials have at last started to release slots and aircraft parking positions for business aviation traffic heading for next month’s Athens Olympic Games–months after busting their own deadlines for filing landing requests. At the new Athens International Airport, some 50 parking spaces have been set aside for head-of-state aircraft.

NBAA has confirmed plans to launch a new annual Asian Business Aviation Conference & Exhibition (ABACE). This July 14 to 16 it will stage a prelude to the new show with its ABACE Forum to be held in Hong Kong. This will be followed by a full-blown event to be held in Shanghai, China, in the summer next year (firm dates to be announced soon).

Jet Aviation is working on plans to establish an FBO in Moscow, offering handling as well as business aircraft charter and management. The U.S.-based group’s Swiss division is running the project and it hopes to have an FBO operational at one of the airports in the Russian capital before year-end.

Universal Weather & Aviation is to open a business aircraft handling operation at Beirut International Airport in Lebanon. The facility will be run as a joint venture with local company Cirrus Middle East and will eventually trade under the name Universal Aviation Beirut.

Corporate aircraft operators wanting to fly to Athens, Greece, for the summer Olympic Games have once again been urged to file slot requests sooner rather than later. The games will run from August 13 to 29, but slot restrictions will be imposed throughout Greece from July 15 until September 30.

Investigation has started into last Thursday’s crash of a Citation I/SP in mountains in northern Iraq. The accident was fatal to all aboard, reportedly four or five passengers and two pilots. The twinjet (German registry D-IMRX, S/N 688) was on a business flight from Baku, Azerbaijan to Sulaimaniya, Iraq. Earlier, the aircraft had flown from Munich to Baku via Budapest.

Phase two manufacturing of sheet metal airframe fabrications and composite materials for the civil market has started at the Smiths Aerospace structures facility at Suzhou in China’s Jiangsu province, about 80 miles west of Shanghai. The first phase of the facility, opened last year, manufactures precision-machined aircraft engine components.

Million Air Salt Lake City held a grand opening in mid-October of its newly remodeled FBO, which includes an 8,000-sq-ft addition featuring a spacious lobby with vaulted ceilings and plenty of natural lighting. The pilots’ lounge has been expanded, and there are new private sleep rooms and showers.
