Don’t expect to see deliveries before 2012 of a new design for a large-cabin Citation based on the mockup shown at the NBAA Convention last year. Cessna is “still studying the business case to determine if it makes sense to go forward,” according to parent company Textron. “Probably be the first quarter of next year before we finally make that decision,” said Campbell.
Cessna has asked the FAA to allow the Citation CJ4, being certified under Part 23, to meet the lower landing gear ground loads of Part 25. The reduced ground loads under Part 25 will result in an overall weight reduction of 36 pounds. “A 36-pound reduction per aircraft can provide a 0.24-pound fuel saving over a typical flight,” Cessna said.
It wouldn’t be an NBAA Convention if Cessna failed to announce a new Citation, and this year it introduced two: the clean-sheet CJ4 and the XLS+ upgrade. First flight of the 11-seat CJ4 is planned for spring 2008, with FAA certification to follow in late 2009. Service entry of the $7.995 million twinjet is expected in spring 2010. As of today, Cessna said it has orders for 70 CJ4s.
Cessna Aircraft received orders here for 22 of its Citation-series jets in a number of deals totaling more than $360 million.
While several specific orders were named, a spokesman told NBAA Convention News that a majority of undisclosed orders received so far at the show were for the company’s new $11.945 million Citation XLS+.
Prompted by inquiries last week from AIN, Cessna today will confirm in a short press release that it is introducing the Citation CJ4 at the NBAA Convention in October.
Rockwell Collins was the big winner of cockpit positions in airplanes introduced at NBAA’06. The manufacturer’s Pro Line 21 avionics were selected for the Cessna XLS+ and the new CJ4 and Raytheon Hawker 900XP and 750.
Cessna’s Citation CJ4 isn’t just another derivative of the CitationJet family–it is a clean-sheet design that incorporates some of the best features found in other Citations. “It has the best of the Encore-plus’s cockpit and cabin, the Mustang’s wide cabin door, Sovereign-style wing performance and the CJ3’s external baggage capacity,” said Citation 500-series product marketing manager Brett Palmiero.
Cessna formally launched two new business twinjets at last month’s NBAA Convention, making the Citation CJ4 and XLS+ the latest in a steady sequence of airplane introductions by the Wichita manufacturer.
Expect Cessna at the NBAA Convention next month to announce the Citation CJ4, a stretched version of the CJ3 with a slightly swept wing based on the Sovereign airfoil. The new aircraft, with a cabin 21 inches longer than the CJ3, will be powered by 3,400-pound-thrust Williams International FJ44-4 turbofans and will likely replace the Encore.
