Esterline CMC Electronics (Booth No. 9740) is showing how its TacView portable mission display brings numerous capabilities to the helicopter cockpit here at Heli-Expo 2012 in Dallas. It is designed for a range of missions, from search and rescue, close air support, firefighting and police operations to medical and offshore oil and gas transport.

AgustaWestland’s new common cockpit concept is being adopted on all of its new helicopters in order to provide an identical “look and feel” to the operators. But the idea is about more than branding. Ultimately, it’s all to do with safety in the hope that in an emergency situation pilots will not have to give a moment’s thought to which model they are flying since all the commands are identical.

Vector Aerospace Helicopter Services has received an FAA supplemental type certificate (STC) for an integrated cockpit display system (ICDS) in the Bell 407. EASA and Transport Canada certification are pending. Vector developed the 407 STC in partnership with Safran Group’s Sagem Avionics.

Honeywell and Sagem have teamed to offer integrated cockpits for helicopter upgrade programs combining the Sagem Integrated Cockpit Display System (ICDS) with Honeywell communication, navigation and enhanced safety/surveillance systems. They are focusing on helicopter fleet upgrades and retrofit opportunities for U.S. military training, drug interdiction in Latin America, EMS, law enforcement and electronic newsgathering.

The idea seems simple enough: give operators of aging business jets the opportunity to remove all of their old round gauges or cockpit CRT screens and replace them with modern liquid-crystal glass displays and they would likely jump at the chance for a complete front-office makeover.

After months of waiting, Sagem Avionics says it is tantalizingly close to receiving its first FAA supplemental type certification (STC) for the company’s Integrated Cockpit Display System retrofit cockpit.

The typical business airplane at different points in its lifetime will receive overhauled engines, a refurbished interior and more than a few coats of fresh paint, along with a host of required periodic maintenance checks and upgrades, all of which constitute the obligatory costs of operating a business jet or turboprop.

Acrohelipro and Carson helicopters are outfitting the first two of Carson’s Sikorsky S-61 fleet with Sagem Avionics’ integrated cockpit display system retrofit. Carson will retrofit 10 S-61s over the next two-and-a-half years. The refit includes five 10-inch cockpit displays, comprising two primary flight displays, two multifunction displays and one caution advisory panel for CAS messages.

The scene was straight out of a science fiction movie. Thick coils of wire wound like serpents along the pale green walls. More wire slithered up from the floor in bundles as thick as rope. Part of an overhead instrument panel hung from the ceiling, suspended by yet more wires.

Sagem Avionics and General Dynamics Aviation Services are partnering on a glass-panel cockpit upgrade for Part 25 jets including the Challenger 600 and 601, Falcon 20 and 50, Gulfstream II and III, and Hawker 700 and 800. The upgrade comprises five 10.4-inch-diagonal displays, which include a PFD and MFD in front of each pilot with an EICAS display in the center.
