Collin County Regional Airport at McKinney

February 6, 2014 - 12:30am

The city of McKinney, Texas, has completed changing the name of its airport to McKinney National Airport from Collin County Regional Airport. The rebranding accompanies the city’s $25 million purchase of the lone FBO on the field, formerly operated by Cutter Aviation, from Schuler Development, along with several more hangars and improvements. The Dallas suburb planned the changes as a cornerstone for economic development of the airport as well as a means to erase the annual $600,000 subsidy the city has provided it.

While the new Runway 18/36 at Collin County Regional Airport (KTKI) took longer to build than anyone would have liked–about seven years from first concept to the first takeoff–the new 7,002-foot-long by 150-foot-wide surface was badly needed to replace the original runway built in 1979.

The $52 million project in McKinney, Texas, consumed nearly 53,000 tons of concrete and was constructed just east of the original surface, which now serves as a parallel taxiway. The runway was the Texas Department of Transportation’s largest ever aviation construction project.

Venice Airport on Florida’s Gulf Coast stands out among the 40 or so fields that received FAA Airport Improvement Program grants totaling more than $260 million in August. It’s not because Venice is a bastion of business aviation activity–the field is lucky to see six bizjet movements per day–nor did it receive the largest ($32.9 million) or smallest ($791,000) grant.
