Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University has a new program that will allow transition from aviation enthusiast to regional airline pilot in less than a year. The accelerated First Officer Flight Training Program is designed as a 10- to 12-month course which provides 550 hr of total flight experience and advanced simulator flight time, preparing the candidate for a position as a first officer on a domestic regional airline.

The FAA has outlined in a new information for operators (InFO 08008) the ICAO English language proficiency requirements, which took effect last month. The ICAO Annex 1 standards require all licensed pilots, as well as flight engineers and flight navigators operating internationally as required crewmembers, to hold an airman certificate with a language proficiency endorsement.

“I’m from the FAA and I’m here to help you” will probably remain a dubious phrase, if the results of an FAA customer-satisfaction survey are any sign. In the fourth annual survey of U.S. commercial pilots conducted by the University of Michigan and its partners, the FAA gained nine points in its overall rating, up to 64 (out of 100).

Sixty years ago, with the outcome of the World War II still nearly 12 months in the future, 52 nations met in Chicago to agree on a format for the worldwide development of civil aviation in the post-war environment. As codicils to the Chicago Convention of Dec. 7, 1944, which formalized the existence of ICAO, each operational remit area was amplified by means of a numbered Annex.

FH1100 Manufacturing will offer all-turbine pilot training in the Florida panhandle beginning in May. Course content will range from ab initio through commercial and CFI-I. The commercial pilot curriculum can be tailored to individual pilot needs, will include training in elevated platform operations for potential offshore pilots and–at advanced levels–external load training might also be offered.

Universal Weather & Aviation (Booth No. 7666) has received FAA approval to become an aircraft dispatcher training course provider and is now offering the course to the general public.

The first public six-week course began September 10. The next is scheduled to start November 5.

In the April 23 Federal Register, the Department of Labor (DOL) issued what it called “FairPay” rules that will take effect on August 23. The DOL states, “Under the new FairPay rules, workers earning less than $23,660 per year–or $455 per week–are guaranteed overtime protection.”

Under a notice of proposed rulemaking published today, the FAA is seeking comments on its intention to increase the duration of first-class and third-class medicals for airmen under the age of 40. Currently, the maximum validity of a first-class medical certificate is six months, regardless of age.
