Customer knowledge today about office-in-the-sky communications technology seems to be similar to the level of understanding of personal computers 10 to 15 years ago. Buyers then knew they needed a PC of some sort but many remained unclear about exactly what kind of computer they needed.

Cessna Aircraft has selected the AirCell Axxess satcom system as a factory option on the Citation X, Sovereign and XLS. Axxess, introduced at the NBAA Convention last month, is a multi-channel, wireless broadband-ready satcom system designed for midsize to large business jets. The standard Axxess system includes two Iridium satellite communications channels for voice and narrowband data services. Two more channels are available as an option.

The Boeing 777-200LR Worldliner which made a record flight between Hong Kong and London earlier this month was equipped with technology from AeroMobile, a joint venture between Arinc and Telenor, enabling passengers to use cell phones en route.

It acts as a consultant to its customers, offering what the company said are unbiased options about voice and data connectivity aboard business aircraft.

Satellite communications service provider Satcom Direct (Booth No. 225) has introduced a new service called International Global One Number, or iGON, that allows customers to use “home country” telephone number prefixes when traveling. The service eliminates the need for customers who are based in Europe to dial a U.S.-prefix routing number when placing voice, fax or data calls.

Staying connected is getting easier, as Arinc Direct announced that its SkyLink broadband Internet service for business jets is now available above more than 20 European countries. According to the company, SkyLink is the only commercially available ultra-high-speed Ku-band Internet satellite service for business aircraft. Additional coverage is under development to connect SkyLink’s North American coverage with Europe.

International Communications Group (Booth No. 1447) is making it easier to reach out and touch someone. The Newport News, Va. company says its latest system, the AeroCom 1100 cabin telecommunications unit (CTU), provides an automated, integrated package that supports telephone, fax and data services for small to medium-sized business jets.
