Sporty’s Pilot Shop (N-100, N-101) highlighted its recently unveiled Partner Programs along with new products and services at its annual Sun ’n’ Fun press conference here in Lakeland, Fla. Sporty’s trio of Partner Programs provide discounts and rebates to flight instructors, flying clubs and FBOs for their orders from Sporty’s, paid quarterly. “One [flying] club just got a check for $200,” said Michael Wolf, president of the pilot supplies provider.
BendixKing is ending product support for its myWingMan iPad app and will reimburse purchasers with “a full refund equal to any subscription fees paid.” While pilots will still be able to use the app, BendixKing noted that “no further product or chart data updates will be available, and as such [we] suggest that you uninstall myWingMan to prevent the inadvertent use of expired data.” The company explained, “We do not feel that it fully represents the value and quality that BendixKing provides daily to pilots worldwide.
Gama Aviation has received approval from the UK CAA for flight crews to use Apple iPads for flight-planning and airborne chart purposes when flying G-registered aircraft. Gama pilots will use iPads equipped with Jeppesen’s Mobile FliteDeck app. The iPads also feature the Airwatch Secure Content Locker, “a cloud-based library publication system that allows crews to download and manage operational flight-deck documents,” according to Gama. So far 22 Gama pilots are trained to use the iPad EFBs, which also contain operating manuals, reference handbooks and checklists.
The recent FAA rule on cockpit use of personal electronic devices applies only to Part 121 carriers, although the NTSB would like to see the rule extended to cover Part 135 and Part 91K operators. Houston-based ForeFlight (Booth No. 3603), creator of ForeFlight Mobile iPad app, is here at Heli-Expo showcasing features in the app it claims helicopter pilots “can’t live without.”
These features include subscription-free ADS-B weather; hazard overlays; and a color-coded flight rules feature that provides basic weather conditions information at a glance. The information can be used for pre-flight preparation or en route, when ADS-B IN weather is available or using an inflight Internet connection.
Lightspeed Aviation (Booth No. 5900) announced that its entry-level Sierra ANR (active noise reduction) headset may now be paired to Lightspeed’s proprietary FlightLink app, offering pilots the ability to capture radio transmissions for playback and archiving.
“Sierra has been our primary vehicle for introducing the benefits of premium ANR headsets to student pilots,” said Teresa De Mers, Lightspeed executive vice president for sales, marketing and support. “The addition of FlightLink to its capabilities adds a new level of utility to its already exceptional comfort and quiet.”
Just in time for the Heli-Expo show, the United States Helicopter Safety Team (USHST) announced an app–I Fly Safe–that will provide helicopter pilots and operators with expert safety information. The app will offer access to a library of the latest safety bulletins, essays, fact sheets and videos, as well as a link to the new www.USHST.org website. I Fly Safe can be used on iPads, iPhones and Android phones and will be available from the Apple Store on February 24.

The company tested the iPad Air to 51,000 feet, similar to tests conducted on all previous iPad versions. “No anomalies were detected during testing of any of the iPad models,” according to Jeppesen, which makes the Mobile FliteDeck and FliteDeck VFR apps for the iPad.

Bombardier has launched a free Proximity App for its business aircraft customers. It’s available from the Apple App Store and provides users with instant access to Bombardier’s support team on their iPad and iPhone. “Each day, our worldwide team works hand in hand with Bombardier aircraft operators to ensure they reach optimal dispatch availability,” Andy Nureddin, Bombardier Business Aircraft vice president for customer services and support, told AIN.
