The Bush Administration announced a new national policy last month that would encourage congested airports to vary landing fees based on the time of day and the volume of traffic. As a result, airports would be able to spread traffic more evenly throughout the day, the Transportation Department said.
Operators now have until October 12 to comment on the FAA’s proposed long-term solutions to the congestion and delay problems at New York La Guardia Airport (LGA). The original comment period was to have ended in the middle of last month. As previously reported, under one plan six GA slots would be set aside each hour for a total of 96 over LGA’s 16-hr peak period of 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Currently GA gets 108 slots from 6 a.m. to midnight.
If the DOT adopts “market-based” actions to relieve airport congestion and delays, which it is considering, landing fees could soar for corporate and commercial operators.
