While the rest of the world continues to struggle in the grip of an economic crisis, the recent Latin American Business Aviation Conference & Exhibition (Labace) suggests that business aviation in Latin America, and Brazil in particular, is healthy and growing. Labace 2009’s record log of 13,342 visitors was 1,212 more than the previous year, not to mention the healthy list of 110 exhibitors.
Cessna said Brazil is its leading market for jets outside the U.S., with an in-country fleet of more than 200 Citations. The Mustang accounts for approximately 10 percent of the Citation fleet in Brazil, with 22 of the entry-level jets in the hands of Brazilian customers. The Citation Sovereign and XLS+ are also popular in Brazil, Cessna said.
Hawker Beechcraft King Air B350, Porto Segura, Brazil, May 23, 2009–Operated by Metered Holdings, the turboprop twin crashed approximately 200 yards short of Runway 15 at private Terravista airport (SBTV) at the end of a flight from Congonhas-São Paulo International Airport. The pilot and all 13 passengers were killed and the aircraft sustained substantial damage.

High above the miles-long ribbons of daily traffic jams in Brazil’s largest city, São Paulo, there is luxurious freedom in the more than 420 helicopters that flit from rooftop to rooftop. According to Cleber Mansur, president of the Brazilian Helicopter Pilots Association, that number will approach 460 helicopters by 2010. And, he added, there are currently 260 helipads in this sprawling metropolis of more than 3,000 square miles.

One year after beginning construction at its new maintenance facility, Táxi Aéreo Marília (TAM) has begun operations at its Jundiaí center, which will allow the company to handle 120 aircraft per month, double the number it services at its Congonhas facility. A Learjet 35 crashed November 4 in São Paulo, Brazil, killing at least eight people. Witnesses said the airplane, owned by São Paulo-based air-taxi operator Reali Taxi Aerea, was attempting to return to Campo do Marte Airport just after takeoff in light rain, when it slammed nose first into a suburban neighborhood.
