Panasonic Avionics yesterday introduced what it calls a “global communications suite” designed to provide world leader head-of-state aircraft with the ultimate in airborne connectivity. Branded as eXConnect and eXPhone, the Ku-band satellite services will make their debut in a Boeing Business Jet within the coming weeks.

Boeing’s planned Connexion airborne broadband data service was dealt a damaging blow last month when its three largest customers–American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines–abruptly withdrew from the project in the face of their own fiscal difficulties. As a result, Boeing is left with no equity partners in the venture and only one customer, Lufthansa, for the fledgling in-flight Internet and e-mail service.

Rockwell Collins and Connexion by Boeing are teaming to create a broadband satellite data service for business jets that will fly first aboard Bombardier’s Global 5000 and Global Express XRS.

Boeing’s new Connexion satellite Internet service last month began operating in revenue passenger service aboard a Lufthansa Boeing 747-400 flying daily between Frankfurt, Germany, and Washington Dulles International Airport. The good news for passengers is that Lufthansa is offering the service free of charge for the duration of this initial three-month trial.

Rockwell Collins said last month that it has completed the purchase of the SkyLink broadband terminal product line from Arinc for its relaunched eXchange data offering. Collins will sell and support the product line to large business jet operators and OEMs, while Arinc will continue to provide SkyLink Ku-band satellite services.
