Controller-pilot datalink communication (CPDLC) services will be launched in Hungarian airspace beginning next February to improve air safety, as well as to increase airspace efficiency. CPDLC capabilities for ATC become mandatory from February next year as a part of the Single European Sky program for harmonizing air traffic management.

HungaroControl, the air navigation service provider of Hungary, said it has started a €6.8 million ($9 million) program to implement data communications between controllers and pilots. The company plans to introduce controller-pilot datalink communications (CPDLC) next February as required by Single European Sky regulation.

Canadian air navigation service provider Nav Canada says the number of monthly controller-pilot datalink communications (CPDLC) contacts in domestic airspace has grown 10-fold since September 2012. At that time the monthly tally was about 7,000, but by May this year it had reached 76,000. National adoption of CPDLC was completed in April this year when the Toronto center began employing the text-based communications system.

Thales’ offer in cockpit, cabin and air traffic control (ATC) electronics is evolving into a comprehensive “connected aircraft” concept. The company (Hall 4 Innovation Zone A21) is studying how flight-deck connectivity can piggyback on the satellite communications equipment installed for the passenger cabin. Here at the Farnborough Airshow for the first time is the Avionics 2020 cockpit demonstrator, featuring cockpit-pilot datalink communications (CPDLC).

Rockwell Collins and Kobev International have introduced a new Fans 1/A and CPDLC training program that is available for in-aircraft training at a customer’s location or at Rockwell Collins’s facility in Annapolis, Md., or at Kobev International in Sugar Grove, Ill. The training “emulates a pilot’s real-world communications with ATC,” according to Rockwell Collins, and allows pilots to “have an interactive experience with real-time feedback.” The emulation program was developed by Rockwell Collins’s Arinc Direct.

Significant numbers of business aircraft operators have made little or no progress in complying with key avionics mandates, according to new research commissioned by Honeywell Aerospace with data gathered from AIN readers. The survey identified the mandates for ADS-B out, Fans/PM-CPDLC datalink capability and Fans-1/A (North Atlantic region) as the most pressing concerns.
