Aviation–and more particularly business aviation–is increasingly becoming the dominant component in the portfolio of UK public company BBA Group. The London-based group aviation holdings on both sides of the Atlantic now account for close to 60 percent of its worldwide business (out of approximately $2.3 billion total revenues recorded last year).

Harrods Aviation (Booth No. 1939) is set to open its new, purpose-built FBO at London Luton Airport in December. The $12 million investment by the UK business aviation services group consists of a substantial two-floor building constructed around an existing hangar, with room for dedicated arrival and departure lounges and extra office space.
An extensive “restructuring” of Boeing’s Alteon Training subsidiary will see the company close four training centers, redistribute assets to other centers and open a new facility in Shanghai to house the first Boeing 787 simulator in China. The facilities marked for closure include Long Beach, Calif., Dallas, Texas, Kunming, China and Luton, UK. Boeing expects to close the two U.S. centers and the Chinese facility in December.
Pratt & Whitney Canada has opened an 8,000-sq-ft facility about 10 miles from London Luton Airport. It is dedicated to servicing, repairing and conducting hot-section inspections on PW300s, PW500s and JT15s. The facility will act as the base for a mobile team for field repairs.
Probably more active here at Farnborough International 2006 than any other exhibitor is ATC Lasham (Hall 1/Stand B22), which handles all arriving and departing aircraft.
Responding to the rapid growth in demand for training in the area of unmanned aerial systems, Qinetiq’s Empire Test Pilots’ School, located at the UK Ministry of Defence MOD Boscombe Down site, late last month completed its first “Introduction to Unmanned Aerial Systems Trials and Evaluation” short course. Fourteen delegates from the UK armed forces and civilian personnel from Qinetiq attended.
Harrods Aviation at London Luton Airport is preparing to relocate to much larger premises by next summer. The British FBO will move to Hangar 129, which is adjacent to the airport’s existing cargo area and offers its own security entrance from a road that avoids traffic heading for the main passenger terminal.

Gulfstream’s service center at London Luton Airport is one of 12 factory support facilities, but it is currently unique in being the only one on soil foreign to the Savannah, Ga.-based OEM. It is also one of the most recent additions to the stable, Gulfstream having acquired a lease on it from Signature in April 2003.
The UK’s Lydd Airport is trying to attract business aircraft with a new executive facility operated by FAL Aviation. The airport, 60 miles southeast of London, has also added an ILS, resurfaced its 4,937-foot runway and installed new runway lights. Standard opening hours at Lydd, which is rebranding itself as London Ashford Airport, are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., but movements are permitted outside these times by prior permission.
