Mitsubishi MU-2B-60, Amarillo, Texas, Feb. 4, 2010–The Board identified the pilot’s loss of directional control while landing on an icy runway as the cause of the MU-2’s runway excursion. The Part 135 flight was landing in night visual conditions at Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport, when the pilot was informed that the runway was covered in snow and ice.
Bombardier Learjet 35A, Kansas City, Mo., Feb. 24, 2009–The co-pilot who was flying the aircraft at the time inadvertently lined up for landing on the wrong runway. Approximately one mile from touchdown, the co-pilot decided to maneuver to land on the correct runway.
BEECHJET 400A, ST. AUGUSTINE, FLA., AUG. 18, 2003–Beechjet N51NP, registered to AC Expeditions and operated by Executive Beechcraft, lost directional control on takeoff from St. Augustine Airport (SGJ) at 7:18 a.m. EDT. The aircraft was substantially damaged, but neither the ATP-rated pilot nor copilot was injured. There were no other occupants in the aircraft, which was operating in VMC on an IFR flight plan.
New tools exist to prevent those accidents that most worry safety experts.
Learjet 25, Amarillo, Texas, July 1, 2005–Landing at Amarillo International Airport with a 17-knot crosswind, the 7,300-hour captain was unable to maintain directional control of the Air America Jet Charter Learjet. The airplane struck a runway distance marker and ran off the runway to the left. The left wingtip tank fuel load was 200 to 300 pounds heavier than the load in the right wingtip.
Gulfstream American Twin Commander 690C, Indianapolis, Feb. 10, 2005–The airplane was substantially damaged, but the occupants uninjured, during a runway excursion while landing on Runway 21 at Eagle Creek Airport. There was a direct right crosswind of approximately 13 knots. The pilot reported that the landing was normal, on centerline, and that touchdown was at the 1,000-foot runway markings.
