Dassault Aviation recently conducted a “successful” flight test to evaluate laminar wings for large business jets. The flight was performed at the company’s flight-test center in Istres, France, using a Falcon 7X equipped with an infrared camera to measure differences in surface temperatures between laminar and turbulent areas of the horizontal tailplane.

William Fox, 68, a long-time employee of Dassault Falcon Jet, died on ­November 16 in Mountain Home, Ark. An Air Force veteran, he served 32 years with the ­airframer as an electrical engineer before his retirement.

Dassault has downplayed last week’s newspaper quotes by John Rosanvallon, Dassault Falcon’s CEO, regarding the company’s partnership plans in China. Rosanvallon commented in French financial daily La Tribune about discussions with airframer Avic on the possibility of cooperation on an indigenous business jet design or a local Falcon final assembly facility.

Dassault is working steadily toward a certification date of 2016 for its much anticipated super-midsize (SMS) ­Falcon business jet, Olivier Villa, ­Dassault's senior vice president for civil aircraft, told AIN at last month's Middle East ­Business Aviation show in Dubai. Launched in ­January 2008, the twin-engine SMS is intended to be the successor to the out-of-production three-engine Falcon 50.

The new Jet Falcon interior is available in three designs: classic, style and fashion, all of which make use of standardized and modular processes, including preproduction of materials, to minimize downtime and cut costs.

Visitors to the MEBA static display will see some Dassault Falcon business jets equipped with Aviation Partners, Inc. (API) Blended Winglets. And more models of the Falcon family will sport API winglets as regulatory approvals come through early next year for upgrades to the 900 and 50 series.

Dassault Falcon Jet chairman Charles Edelstenne offered a less-than-glowing look at the current state of business aviation as it struggles with the recession and he noted in a press conference yesterday that there are mixed signals with regard to a recovery.

It was three years ago at the NBAA Convention in Orlando that the industry was faced with the sub-prime crisis, he pointed out. "Today, we are still struggling," he added.

Falcon 900LX...

Financial results for the first half of 2010 appeared to suggest that Dassault Aviation has begun to reverse the severe downward trend its Falcon business jet operations have endured over the past 24 months or so.
