Simphone is an airborne telephone with options that include a
self-contained ACARS/AFIS datalink module, Iridium fax, a legacy satcom interface and embedded Wi-Fi.
Satellite communications services reseller Satcom Direct last month announced it has sent and received AFIS/Acars datalink messages over the Inmarsat I-4 satellite constellation, marking a first for a satcom service provider. The messages were broadcast from a Global Express using Satcom Direct’s FlightDeck Freedom service in collaboration with the SITA datalink network.

When connected to an aircraft’s communications management unit, the DL-100 transceiver uses the short-burst data functionality of the Iridium satellite network to send Acars and other messages.

The products offer flight deck voice and datalink services over the Iridium satellite network. ICG’s ICS-120A system incorporates a single Iridium transceiver and a short-burst-data (SBD) modem enabling connections to standard flight-deck voice and data systems.
Eurocontrol has introduced a new screen-to-screen datalink between pilots and air traffic controllers at its Maastricht upper-area control (UAC) center in the Netherlands. The controller-pilot datalink communication (CPDLC) system supplements existing voice contact by allowing text messages between screens in the cockpit and on the ground to reduce workload at both ends.
