Flight data monitoring provider Latitude Technologies (Booth No. 411) and AKV (Booth No. 1624), maker of engine cycle counters for helicopters, announced a jointly developed technical interface between the companies’ products. The new interface is designed to provide fleet operators with valuable engine condition and performance data.

North Flight Data Systems (Booth No. 413) of Shreveport, La., announced here at Heli-Expo that it has received a supplemental type certificate (STC) that adds the Bell 407GX to the list of model 407 series helicopters certified for its CVR/FDR (cockpit voice recorder/flight data recorder) system. It also received STC approval for installation in the Airbus Helicopters AS350B3 and the EC130B4 models.

Latitude Technologies announced that its Flight Data Monitoring (FDM) system is now available on a subscription basis, which gives fleet operators the opportunity to reduce upfront capital costs dramatically. Latitude Technologies President Mark Insley explained the reason for the move away from the purchase-only option. “We want to make it simple for operators to get FDM embedded in their fleet operations so they see how the data captured by the IONode can help improve flight safety and operating efficiencies.”

Flight Data Systems (Booth No. 7015) is at this year’s NBAA show highlighting its line of ground-support equipment, which interfaces with flight-data recorders to download data files for flight analysis and replay. It makes not only data download equipment but also flight replay software that includes 3-D flight path reconstruction.

French accident investigators over the weekend extracted the data from the memory cards inside the flight recorders recovered from the ill-fated Air France Flight 447, increasing the likelihood that they’ll finally reach a conclusion about the cause of the June 1, 2009 crash into the South Atlantic that killed 228.

The FAA has grudgingly agreed to delay certain portions of an original April 2010 compliance date requiring installation of cockpit voice recorders (CVR) and digital flight data recorders (FDR) in many U.S.-registered airplanes. But the agency issued a stern rebuke to aircraft manufacturers for their failure to address known technical issues sooner.

The FAA last month issued an STC applicable to the King Air series for Universal Avionics’ new cockpit voice recorder, which is part of a lineup of five model options ranging from a basic CVR to a combined CVR and flight-data recorder (CVFDR), available with or without internal recorder independent power supply (Rips). Universal said the CVFDR’s internal Rips option is unique in the data recorder market.

American Eurocopter and the Bristow Group’s Air Logistics unit have partnered separately with “augmented reality solutions” provider Appareo Systems (Booth No. 4537) to develop a low-cost device that is intended to provide some of the safety and training benefits of fully certified cockpit voice and flight data recorders.
