The pilots of U.S. regional airline American Eagle and the management of American Airlines merger partner US Airways have apparently reached an impasse in negotiations over a new contract, potentially delaying further an expected new regional jet order by the “new” American.

Delta Air Lines and Virgin Atlantic Airways took the first step toward confronting the formidable threat of the recent British Airways-American Airlines pairing as regulators approved Delta’s acquisition of Singapore Airlines’ 49-percent stake in the UK carrier last week. The acquisition means that Virgin Atlantic and Delta have cleared a major hurdle in their effort toward forming a full joint venture, an antitrust review of which the U.S. Department of Transportation expects to complete during this year’s third quarter.
Embraer Executive Jets named Brenda Paauwe-Navori as the Western region regional sales director for its large and ultra-large business jet division. She previously managed sales for a business aircraft manufacturer and a fractional ownership firm. Paauwe-Navori has experience in market strategy and prospecting, financial analysis and customer loyalty, Embraer said. She has also been employed in airline charter work, including a stint as senior director of large-cabin sales and operator relations for Virgin Charter and VIP Inflight Liaison at Northwest Airlines.
A 23-year-old male passenger aboard a May 27 Alaska Airlines flight from Anchorage to Portland attempted to open a mid-cabin emergency exit hatch on a Boeing 737 while the aircraft was beginning its initial descent to Portland. Passengers wrestled the man to the floor and subdued him until he could be handed over to police after landing. No one aboard the aircraft was injured. The Boeing’s hatch is designed so that cabin air pressure makes it unopenable in flight.
A number of aircraft accident victims, who have never before spoken on camera and were the only survivors of an aircraft crash, are speaking now as part of a new documentary called, “Sole Survivor,” produced by Yellow Wing Productions. The film opened on a limited basis last week in Detroit and will run again in Minneapolis on May 23 as details of the world premiere are being finalized.
Boeing’s recent assertion that the appetite of capital markets to fund airliner orders has increased comes as especially welcome news to manufacturers and their customers at a time when other sources of funding seem under pressure. Export credit, in particular, now comes generally at higher interest rates and with tougher equity requirements. At the same time, such government-backed capital has become a hostage to global politics, according to Kostya Zolotusky, managing director for capital markets development and leasing at Boeing Capital.

Bombardier has appointed Canada’s Flying Colours to handle an extensive interior modification of seven Bombardier CRJ700 NextGen aircraft for an undisclosed Chinese customer. The work will be conducted over a two-year period and part of the new-look cabins will be fitted out for VIP use.
