Atlantic Southeast Airlines (ASA) pilots on December 15 picketed the company’s newest flight crew base, at Los Angeles International Airport, to protest the lack of progress in their contract talks with management.

The family of one of the victims of the August 27 crash of Comair Flight 5191 in Lexington, Ky., has amended its lawsuit to include charges that Bombardier failed to adequately protect passengers from flammable jet fuel in its design of the CRJ. The Fayette County coroner originally said the post-crash fire killed the 49 victims but later said autopsies determined that most had died from blunt force trauma.
Union leaders expected by the end of last month to tally the votes for or against proposed new labor contracts at Mesaba Airlines, which finally managed to reach tentative agreements with its pilots, flight attendants and mechanics after more than a year of wrangling.
The Comtran jet nozzle retrofit showing here on the Jetran Air MD-82 in the static display makes the airplane compliant with Stage 4 noise regulations, reduces fuel consumption by 1.5-2 percent and extends time between overhauls by lowering the exhaust gas temperature by 10 degrees. And the soon-to-be certified winglets sported by the Bucharest-based twinjet cut fuel consumption by a further 5 to 5.5 percent.
Comair’s Cincinnati maintenance and repair facilities received FAA approval to perform third-party heavy maintenance on other airlines’ 50- and 70-seat Bombardier CRJs, making it one of nine Part 145 CRJ repair stations in the U.S. and potentially softening the blow of a major cut in Delta Connection flying.
U.S. bankruptcy court judge Gregory Kishel again gave Mesaba Airlines permission to impose contract terms on its pilots, flight attendants and mechanics after an appeals court judge overturned Kishel’s first ruling to allow management to force concessions. Days later, Kishel agreed to enforce an injunction sought by Mesaba that effectively bars the employees from striking.
Northwest Airlines last month split an order for 72 regional jets between Embraer and Bombardier. The contracts, still subject to approval by a U.S. bankruptcy court, call for delivery of 36 E175s and 36 CRJ900s, both of which would arrive in dual-class, 76-seat configuration. Northwest plans to award the Embraer jets to its new Compass Airlines subsidiary.
Northwest Airlines won approval from the DOT in late September to launch Compass Airlines, a new wholly owned regional subsidiary to which Northwest plans to assign at least 36 Embraer E175s. Northwest bought the Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity for the operation from the defunct Independence Air and wants to use it to launch service with a single CRJ200 between Minneapolis and Washington Dulles Airport.
Comair reached concessionary labor agreements with its mechanics and flight attendants late last month, but at press time a deal with its pilots continued to elude the Cincinnati-based regional, a major portion of whose route network stands subject to outsourcing by Delta Air Lines to independent carriers.
The union representing the pilots of SkyWest Airlines regional airline subsidiary Atlantic Southeast Airlines on October 13 began picketing the long-time union-free parent company at its St. George, Utah headquarters. At press time, the sides remained far apart on demands for what the union calls a “moderate” wage increase and work rule improvements.
