Austro Engine (Outside Exhibit 18), part of the group that owns Austria’s Diamond Aircraft, is exhibiting its new diesel and rotary engines for light aircraft and drones at the 2012 Farnborough International Airshow. The company is actively talking to other airframers about finding new applications for its AE series of diesel engines, which will include the in-development AE500.

Aurora Flight Sciences is displaying its Diamond DA42 optionally piloted aircraft (OPA) on the Diamond Aircraft stand here (OE18). The low-cost intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) solution is compatible with NATO standards, and “combines the best of manned and unmanned surveillance aircraft capabilities,” said U.S.-based Aurora.
Called the Centaur, the OPA can be self-deployed, as its ground control equipment fits in the aircraft’s cargo compartment. Conversion from manned to unmanned-configuration takes two crewmembers less than four hours.

The Diamond DA52 twin diesel made its first flight on Tuesday afternoon from the company’s headquarters in Neustadt, Germany. Diamond Aircraft chairman Christian Dries and head of flight-test Ingmar Mayerbuch were at the controls of the Austro Engine AE300E-powered airplane. No abnormalities were reported during the one-hour test flight. Diamond has not yet released a timetable for certification or production of the new seven-seat twin.

Aircraft sales, services and support company Hawker Pacific (Booth H65) has announced an agreement with Flight Training Adelaide for the sale of up to 26 Diamond DA40 CS single-engine composite aircraft. In addition to serving as a vendor for Hawker Beechcraft and Bell Helicopter products, Hawker Pacific is the Austrian airframer’s appointed distributor for Australia and New Zealand.

Flight Training Adelaide, which trains cadets for airlines such as Cathay Pacific, Dragonair, Qantas, QantasLink, JAL Express and J-Air, has ordered eight firm and 18 optional Diamond DA40 light single-engine aircraft for its Parafield, Australia base. The contract was signed with Diamond Aircraft in conjunction with Australian distributor Hawker Pacific, which will provide after-sales support.

Diamond Aircraft has revealed a surge of orders for the DA42 Multi-Purpose Platform (MPP), also known as the Guardian. It is the surveillance version of the Austrian company’s DA42 twin-engine training and touring aircraft. A total of 91 are now in service, in places such as Europe (18), Africa (14), the Middle East (11), the CIS (9), Australasia (20) and the Americas (14).

Diamond Aircraft CEO Christian Dries is focusing “more on strategy and specific programs,” following the appointment of Gerd Berchtold as CEO of the company’s Austria-based production and engineering division. Berchtold is responsible for design, production and customer support and reports to Dries, who is the shareholder of Diamond Aircraft.
