As receivers of bankrupt regional jet manufacturer Fairchild Dornier awaited a takeover bid from a partnership led by Russian conglomerate Basic Element last month, another group of investors that hopes to prove more palatable to aircraft program stakeholders and the German  government suddenly surfaced.

On June 6, AvCraft Aviation of Tyler, Texas, received the first STC cabin interior approval for the Fairchild Dornier 328JET, and the aircraft–known as the Envoy 3 in its business aircraft guise–is now in service with an Akron, Ohio advertising and public relations firm, and doing business as Ultimate Air Charters.

Another truss fell from Fairchild Dornier’s tenuous financial footing last month, as potential suitor Bombardier Aerospace declared that it no longer harbored any interest in investing in the foundering 728 and 928 programs. The timing of the decision came as a surprise, given Bombardier president and CEO Robert Brown’s prior indications that the company’s commercial analysis would last until at least late this month.

London Biggin Hill Airport-based charter firm PlaneChartering, owner of the loss-making Club328 brand, disbanded its Fairchild Dornier 328Jet and Hawker Beechcraft Premier Is and laid off 14 of its pilots last month. Meanwhile, PlaneChartering group CEO Paul Crowther is taking over from Club328’s CEO, Elaine Young, who left the company. PlaneChartering acquired Southampton, UK-based Club328 from Corporate Jet Services in October.

Leesburg, Va.-headquartered AvCraft Aviation’s takeover of Fairchild Dornier’s 328 program, including the 328JET production line at Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany, was pronounced complete on March 26 by insolvency administrator Dr. Eberhard Braun, who is responsible for selling off the various divisions of the bankrupt aircraft manufacturer. According to the plant’s new management, production should resume during the first quarter of next year.

Leesburg, Va.-based AvCraft last month signed a contract to buy the Fairchild Dornier 328 program and its associated support businesses. The deal, at press time still subject to government approvals, would include the rights to the Fairchild name, the plant and equipment for the manufacture of 328s and 18 fully built 328JETs in storage at the bankrupt company’s Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany manufacturing complex.
