A major release of iFlightPlanner’s iPad app—Version 2.0–adds many new features to the flight planning and moving-map app, including virtual GPS capability to display simulated own-ship position on FSX and X-Plane flight simulators and an integrated flight recorder. The iFlightPlanner app synchronizes with the company’s flight-planning website, including the mobile version, so flight plans created on the website can easily be synchronized with the user’s iPad.
AOPA has released an update to its FlyQ iPad electronic flight bag app that adds ADS-B connectivity and expands Duats integration. New features in version 1.1 include ADS-B in-flight weather with support for the new Dual XGPS 170 ADS-B/Waas GPS receiver. The app also offers CSC Duats support, in addition to existing DTC Duat support, for weather information and flight-plan filing. Other enhancements include “Direct To” and “Add to Plan” buttons for flight planning, as well as in-app rental car booking through Enterprise.
At the DTC Duat Services booth (No. C11236), NBAA attendees can check out the free DTC iPhone/iPad app, which provides mobile access to features such as flight planning and filing, weather briefing and graphics and a convenient way to check for TFRs before takeoff.
One of the least welcome rites of passage for copilots is the routine chore of updating the company’s flight operations documents, with Jeppesen manuals probably at the top (or the bottom, if you prefer) of the list. And the post-9/11 flood of TFRs hasn’t made the task any easier.
Air Support’s Preflight Planning System (PPS) is a flight planning engine that produces an operational computer flight plan showing routes, flight levels, distance, time and fuel needs, including reserves.
Users of Flight Explorer’s Professional Aircraft Situation Display can now access Universal Weather & Aviation’s UVTripPlanner global airport data via Flight Explorer. The airport data is located in Flight Explorer’s Airport Summary section and includes information about more than 25,000 airports.

The FAA last month chose Lockheed Martin from a field of five bidders to provide the services now offered by the agency’s 58 automated flight service stations in the continental U.S., Hawaii and Puerto Rico. Under a five-year contract that includes five additional option years, the agency expects to save $2.2 billion if it exercises all of the option years.
Online is where it’s at, and FltPlan. com allows corporate, charter and business aircraft users to create IFR flight plans online free of charge. The Web site provides a navigation log, weather data, IFR filing capability, airport information (including diagrams and a list of fields closest to a given city), passenger flight briefing sheets, low- and high-altitude en route charts and customized aircraft performance numbers.
Effective January 5, when filing an FAA flight plan (with the exception of filing through DUATS and flight service stations), RVSM-compliant operators are expected to file “/Q” (RVSM with a FMS or GPS) or “/W” (RVSM without FMS and GPS), as appropriate, for flight in RVSM airspace (between FL290 and FL410 inclusive).
